Matt needed a haircut. That might not sound like an emergency, but when we got the phone call, you might have thought it was. I’m a video producer with the North American Mission Board, and my videographer and I had been in Norwich, Connecticut for several days shooting a video story on Shaun Pillay. Shaun is a church planter there who’s organized what he calls “proclamation points” all over the city. The name is pretty self-explanatory—for Shaun, a proclamation point is simply a place outside the four walls of their church where he and the people from his church plant can proclaim the Gospel. The phone call was from Darrick Shelby, owner of Fashion 101 Barber Shop. The barber shop is one of Shaun’s proclamation points. We were planning on shooting video of the weekly men’s Bible study there that evening, but Darrick had called to tell us that we might want to get to his barber shop immediately—about an hour early—because he “had a customer there right now whose story we needed to hear.” Matt was that customer. When we got to the barber shop, we found Matt telling Darrick his life story, and we found Darrick telling Matt Jesus’ story. We’ve always been really cautious about shooting video when conversations like this are taking place. Our work is important, but someone hearing the Gospel without distraction is even more important. Darrick and Matt both encouraged us to do our thing though, so my videographer whipped out the camera and started shooting—tentatively at first, then more aggressively as everyone seemed to eventually forget we were there. This is what happened.
