this is the worst story ever, you lost your job and your goal was to get from negative to zero. epic fail! your unemployment checks will run out and you will be back in negative. you think you're so special you get unemployment checks you have to make a movie about it? gtfo next!

Keep your negative remarks to yourself. They're not welcome on Vimeo. Constructive criticism is always welcome of course. I took the point of this video as a reminder to take a step back and re-assess everything should the misfortune of getting laid-off happen. I don't believe Anthony thinks' he's "special" because he gets unemployment benefits. Go back to youtube, where you can chant "Epic Fail" until your old enough to drive.

You have obviously taken too many wipeouts to the head. Please, start wearing a helmet. Oh yeah, speaking of jobs and getting terminated, I wager that will be YOU after high school. You are definitely not college material. Go join the Army.
  • Gary 10 months ago
Not only do you have the audacity to criticize someone unfairly--this is an inspirational video about turning one's self around after being laid off, not gloating about an unemployment check--you disrespectfully pirate an image of Patrick Stewart to use as your avatar, whose hand you wouldn't be worthy to shake. Why don't you go taunt your brethren idiots on You Tube?

LOVE it. Very 'American Beauty' feel to it. I too lost my job six months ago, in the creative field. I was more stressed about money when I was working than I am now - weird, huh? Your video was beautiful.

    Been there, in 2001.

How do you do the cool moving graphics? Is that just a jumpback?
  • Anthony Ferraro 11 months ago
The anchor element is a jumpback. There is a Great Company Called Video CoPilot. They offer pretty amazing "free" after effects tutorials. They sell these composite element bundles. I made the composite in this with a few elements from them as well as some magic bullet plug ins.

Don't worry about money, capitalism is collapsing. In five years time banknotes will be a mere curiosity. Keeping your neighbours away from your food stash, now that will be a worry.

Great story and story telling. How did you do the title sequence, and the snow/curve visual effects?
  • Anthony Ferraro 11 months ago
    Thanks Jeff.

I simply composite many pre made elements.
The snow curve is simply a jumpback. The other flourishes are added every other shot are not built by me i have a collection of them. Then some grungy matts and color correction. Most of the stuff was from composite element collections I have.

Hey! Great film man. I've just filed for bankruptcy after studying animation for four years. I've struggled paying off uni fees and and credit cards for years now. The bit I get for working for myself was going straight on repayments and life was very bad. One day I just thought f*ck 'em. I have nothing worth repossessing and I aint getting a job selling TV's, as a result I stopped paying the cards, quit working part time in a shi*ty restaurant and did nothing but AE and cinema 4D for months, big 30 hour chunks some times as learnin can get quite addictive. Now I earn £££'s at home being creative and it feels awesome. Getting back to zero is one of the greatest feelings ever, great story telling my friend and great compositing. If you want to be master of your own destiny and captain of your soul, quit punching the clock

The film you made had a very animated, colourful way with the transparent graphics weaving through it. The message was a positive one too despite the monochrome. It's true about bad things happening to good people; better things will soon come after :) Most people forget that during times of great despair, they have a choice. A choice to rise above. Here's just a little piece of constructive criticism if you don't mind: the graphics have to be a bit slower and more spaced out, that way, the whole thing doesn't get "too crowded" with information. Cheers :)

Perception is a powerful thing. As it is said, 9/10th of the law. I saw people around me being laid off. Even knowing I wasn't immune, I somehow didn't expect it would happen to me. But it eventually did. Only two weeks ago (round #3). And I felt just like you did--it was the worst thing that could happen... In my case I'm lucky not to be in dire financial straights (some severance to tie me over helps), yet the crushed economy fails to soothe the soul who is out of work.

Anyway, I stumbled across your video and have to congratulate you on a very imaginative work! I like the retro theme you used--those vintage b&w video clips are great and very effective at communicating your message.

And it is all about perspective. The best thing is to remain hopeful and not feel like you're caught in a Catch-22. I'm not talking about happy-go-lucky-think-positive sh*t. Hope is what fuels real optimism. And that optimism keeps you going. Life has a funny way of coming up with solutions. For me, losing my job was actually a good thing. I needed to get out of there... the very long commute interfered with being able to look elsewhere. Now I've got time. Maybe more than I would have liked, but I'm starting to network and I think in January there will be much more to be hopeful about. Especially once Obama is at the helm. People need to believe there is intelligent confidence in the White House, something we've been lacking for about 8 years. It will help the economy to begin the rebound.

Keep the hope up. And thanks for sharing your creativity with all of us. It helps inspire a smile for those also out of work. :-)

I didn't quite get laid off yet but my company has sent all of its employees on a 2 week unpaid furlough for the holidays. The layoffs may happen in March. Anyways, everyone I know is telling me how sorry they are for me, etc. and I'm sitting here thinking wow I'm not stressed, I feel liberated in a way. Yes, it's freaky and unstable but I feel like it may be an opportunity for a fresh start. I know it will be ok. Thanks for this video.

Hi Anthony, I like this video because even though I have not been laid off, I still sympathize with those who have. It's great that in personal misfortune there is still a glimpse of hope. Hope that things will be ok no matter what. So thanks. I too will take a little from this and apply it to my life.

I was laid off when I was 20 , I took the money I had saved up, bought a professional drum set and went on playing in bands for 15+ yrs...it was best thing that could of happened to me at the time.

Thank you so much for that. I've been feeling rather guilty for being relieved to be gone and now unemployed. I surely didn't ask for this - I worked in the home building industry, which has severely tanked. Unemployment benefits are better than what I had been taking home recently as a commissioned salesperson. Now, perhaps I can figure out what's next. Good luck to you!

    Anthony,
By now I saw 3 of yours about american life, unemployment and unemployment.
You hit the nail in the head! You will prevail, because you think. And because you think, you are communicationg and laying it on visually in a very poignant way. Whoever doesn't relate to these issues is commatose... Or a millionaire (Ha!)

Excellent analysis of what could be an otherwise traumatic event. I can totally relate, but being creative and resourceful is really our primary job. It's what gets us to the next opportunity, commission or "gig". The rest is just timing and luck mixed w/ a little skill.
