Retired and theater director John Vaccaro moved to New York's East Village in 1961. In a neighborhood lined with abandoned buildings and wandering drug addicts, Vaccaro fixed up a loft space and used it as an incubator for some of the City's more well-known artists. Now, Vaccaro, like so many other East Villagers, is being forced out of his rent-controlled apartment as developers plan to replace his loft with a luxury apartment building.
