"Battle for Brooklyn" opened with a bang, and a whimper. The whimper was from me... the stress of the opening threw my hip out of joint. Well over 1000 people came out opening weekend and we had great Q&A's at every single screening, hip notwithstanding. The success of the weekend led to a full hold over at Cinema Village - an incredible feat for a self-distributed doc (it now runs until at least July 1st).
BfB is a film that follows characters as they live in the world. There are almost no talking heads, and complex data and information is included in limited fashion. As such, the Q&A's have been robust, and a lot of the same questions come up over and over. Many people want to know why Acorn isn't in the film. The answer is that there simply isn't room in the 93 minute film to deal with everything that took place. However, we do have a very strong scene from the cutting room floor that deals with Bertha Lewis and Acorn.
As you will see in this clip, Bertha Lewis, at a Borough Hall press conference, announces that the project will include 50% affordable housing. In answer to a question, she also states that all of the tenants in the footprint will be brought back into the new project at affordable rents. Afterward, Dan let's her know that this isn't happening - and she admits that she actually hasn't gone to tenants yet. At this point, though, most tenants had already been moved out.
A week later the developer announced that there would be 2200 more luxury condos - and the percentage of affordable was reduced to something closer to 33%. As of now, no units are being built, and no plans exist publicly for any housing.
