Celebrate Sonoma is a video series exploring the culture of Sonoma County, CA.
The "Un-edibles" tells the story of how bronze sculptures of asparagus
are made. What could be more Sonoma County than the mix of fresh
produce and bronze art?
The video shows the series of steps used in lost wax casting:
- prepping the original silicone mold
- filling it with wax
- creating a new mold of silica using the wax asparagus
- firing in the kiln to harden the mold and remove the wax
- melting the bronze
- filling the mold with molten bronze
- cutting the bronze out of the mold
- polishing and adding a patina
There were a few steps I wasn’t able to capture, including the making
of the original mold, the patching of the drill holes, and the heating
of the silica mold prior to the bronze pour (otherwise it would just
crack).
Thanks to Matt and Valerie at Bronze Plus in Sebastopol for making
such cool art and sharing the process with Celebrate Sonoma!
