Workshop Facilitators: Penelope Duda, Social Studies teacher/data specialist/ 8th grade team leader, MS 319 and Ysidro Abreu, Principal, MS 319
MS 319 uses the core standards as a way to increase the rigor of our ELA curriculum. Two school wide initiatives that we have implemented this year are the research practicum and literary circles. The research practicum teaches students researching skills that they apply in a day long activity incorporating technology and critical thinking skills to take a stand on an issue and support their thinking with character and evidence. Literary circles is a cooperative reading methodology that we use in Science and Social Studies to support students non-fiction reading skills. During this workshop, we ask participants to evaluate how our school has addressed the core standards through these two initiatives.
