3. LandEscape Teaser 2011
" At the very end of all things, like in the first beginning, No one knows
Everything is about to be written.

So, slowly, the vail of illusion fades out.

Thoughts and memories mix up, an immutable dance of time, space, shadow and light, and in the core of vacuity, the invisible world rebirth.

The world that never was. "

Teaser for a short movie I'm working on for months now on my personal free time.
Still a lot of work to do...
Hope to release a Final cut on the fall 2011

After so many hours working on it, just sharing some of the shots ! Hope you will like the mood of the "invisible"

Adobe After Effects CS5
Particular 2.1
RG Colorista II
5D Mark II
The priceless support from Somepling
Ten thousand cups of Coffee

EDIT __11/27/2011__:

The LandEscape Project should have been online via vimeo on 11/11/2011... But unfortunately I'm unable to keep this date as a release for the final cut.
I'm really sorry and disapointed too but the last three months have been very very complicated to manage with big changes in my life.

I'm still working on the project (and on other stuff) & three new screenshots have been added to my flickr gallery.

Once again I'm really sorry to be unable to keep my schedule. Life is tricky sometimes...

Thanks to all of you for your positives comments and supports. I'm going back to work now...

Bests

Nice work John! what did you use to grade your footage?
  • John H. King plus 7 months ago
Hi Ben, thank you for your comment !!!

Well usually I don't like to do my color grading within after effects, but this time I had to for workflow purpose so I worked with RG colorista II on output footage from Mark II.

    This is extreemly creative!
Would you say a few words about the workflow?
i' mean i'm using Particular since came out but can't figure
HOW?! you managed to get this dens look, and what computer was able to handle this?!
  • John H. King plus 7 months ago
    Hi Bako !
Well to be honest it took me quiet a long time to figure out what was the best way to proceed.
From the beginning I had in mind this idea of abstract organic moving shapes, close to aquatic lifeforms...
So I started many tests to see if I was able to get the right look. I created a basic shape library and then decline them into different states of evolution , small unstable, then more dense, then bigger etc... color direction was really important too. Then you know it's always the same trick, the further you get the further you want to go... so it was like always trying to improve shapes animation etc...
About the "dense" look in many cases I used auxiliary particles system, which is really heavy to handle previz render etc...
I dont' have a hardware killing beast, I really loved to work with a powerfull mac pro but this is out of my budget so... I work with an Imac I-7 with 16Gb Ram.
But you know there are a lot of things for the final cut I'm still wondering " how I'm going to do that" so it's always interesting to challenge yourself even if fighting with hardware is really boring sometimes ;)

Thanks a lot for your comment and interest !!!

    Best

I experience that everyday, this video inspires me even more to do crazy stuff on a PC with 2GB DDR1 and One core A64.

truly amazing! great shadow and camera tracking work also loved how light rays come thru the particules. did u use RG shine and lux for that or just a simple light source?
  • John H. King plus 7 months ago
In the shot at 1.11, lights rays are made with RG Shine and some light source for shading the particles ...
  •

  • Zach Meissner plus 7 months ago
    Unreal work, fantastic job John!!

Curious, what match moving/tracking software did you use?
  • John H. King plus 7 months ago
Thank you very much Zach ;)

I started the Project with Boujou, but pretty quick then moved to PFTrack...
    Never change since ...

In my opinion, it's one of the best 3D Camera Tracker.

But, The Foundry's CAMERATRACKER is really awesome too, it's available for NukeX and AE.

Music is from the soundtrack of a wonderfull movie directed by Scott Hicks "Snow falling on Cedars" composed by the amazing James Newton Howard.

love it!...minor critique...in your final piece consider not using the overused 'blockbuster look' for color grading. Allow the colors of the great 3d renders to really pop...just my 2 cents

    puh - so thats awesome.
i havnt seen anyone making such a good use of particular.
im also wondering about your workflow.
you shot the clips - and 3d tracked them - but how did you compose it together? did u render the particles and import them with the 3d tracked shot in i.e. maya?

would be nice if you could answer cause im really curiouse about how you did it cause i was thinking about trying do to do some 3d tracking stuff myself (not with particles though).
    and again -
  • John H. King plus 6 months ago
Thank you very much for your comment Daniel.

Rendering and compositing are done in AE.

I know that the rendering possibilities are really limited in AE vs a true 3D engine with multi pass.
As far as I know there's no bridge between AE and maya for particles, like exporting the Particular 2 shape in a 3d mesh and opening it in maya to render it.

But sure you can easily build a bridge for tracked camera between nuke or maya or AE...
  • Daniel Prell plus 6 months ago
And thank you for your kind reply! thats not "normal" nowadays on vimeo.
After you inspired me to pick up the 3d tracking idea again (last time i messed with it is like one year + ago)
i started "googeling" and found the foundrys camera tracker plugin for ae that seams to be capable of doing the whole tracking, camera disolving, scene building in ae.
im going to get a trial and play with that a bit.

thanks again for your highly inspirational video.
  • John H. King plus 6 months ago

Firstly, I must say how absolutely, jaw-droppingly, amazing your film is. It is beyond beautiful!

I had a technical question for you though. You had said that you used RG Shine to make your light rays; but how did you cast your shadows? did you cover each wall in planes, and then have them accept shadows, then set the blending mode to multiply (or something like that)? -it makes it so believable! it looks sooo 3d :) great job!
