i was wondering if there was a way to get this messed up digital look on purpose.

get a hexeditor and change random bytes in your video samples :) should work, but it could also crash the player :))
  • Axiom Crux plus 8 months ago
check out my vimeo page, Ive been working on methods to do this in realtime with max/msp/jitter.

For a traditional approach, you dont need to hex edit anything, just export a sorenson quicktime with 0 keyframes setting. then when you skip around in the video it will go crazy.

I've found playing WMVs with VLC and setting keyframes far apart + screen capturing while you skip randomly does pretty well.

god damn! that was rad. the ending too- made me go haha out loud.

  • Genarts has a set of vfx plugins called "sapphire." Although the plugins are prohibitively expensive, there is an included effect called 'JPEG damage' which can be customized to mimic the look of this reel very closely, and very easily.

Ages ago I did some fun shader stuff in media player classic (which lets you add your own pixle shaders if you mess with directx settings), and the output was not far off some of this stuff. But I'm not a vj so i didn't really do anything about it!

This is the kind of "glitch stuff" that I really like, because it features the "verge" of glitch things.

Sweet. Any insight on how it was put together? I've used Jitter before for similar (but far less well executed) stuff.

    this tune is sick. \m/

fun bits: i slowed the audio down to 60%, original turned out to be this one: youtube.com/watch?v=Vyk-VeJBU1s

my vote goes to the Loli Ripe version.

The original song is "Without Breaking" by Da Buzz (so now we know where the title of the LOLI RIPE song comes from). Find it here: students.washington.edu/uwdan7/songs/06%20Without%20breaking.mp3

Method of detection: Downloaded "Dirty Buzz" from lastfm (thanks dw1), imported into Audacity, slowed audio to 50% to make out the lyrics, searched phrases in google, yielded search results directing me to filestube.com, found the lyrics and corresponding title & artist, bob's yer uncle.

Ack! You mean that was ON PURPOSE!?? So much for rebooting my modem! Not a huge fan of compression artifacts, but it is interesting that you can do it deliberately.. I could see where it could have its uses...
