For my final exam I made two contrasting video's that both show a part of who I am as a designer. This video called ' Space Monkey' is inspired by the thirty-two brave explores that were send into space in the late forties till the mid nineties. This video tells the story about a brave little monkey who is send into space to fix a machine.
In this video I combined lot's of different analog (and some digital) techniques, the sky is made from painted pieces of cardboard and the stars are made from table salt. The rocket is a model built from paper and all the planets are built from paper-mache, multiple layers of glue, sand and paint. The interiors are cut out of cardboard, and the monkey and some other things like for instance the motherboard are drawn and edited in photoshop. To pull it all together everything is photographed with bright light to give it dark shadows and some extra drama. The reflections on his helmet were made by playing material on a large television and filming the reflection it made on a glass fishbowl. The radar is played on a small 30 year old television where I played a bit with the cables while I recorded the screen with a digital video camera. After I made all if this footage by hand I put it all together and brought it to life using Photoshop and After Effects. The video was actually completely in color, but later I changed it to black and white to give it more of a period feel to it.
The music was created in a similar way as the video, eventually it all came together in the computer but everything was made by hand (accept for some camera sounds), but no bass loops or guitar clips everything was played by hand and he even used an old synthesizer, this makes it all very organic and perfect for my video.
