Fusing the latest interactive technology with street art, the Digital Graffiti Wall is ideal for corporate and opening events, music festivals, trade shows and brand promos. It's a unique, unifying activity that brings people together and generates a great atmosphere.

For brands, the Digital Graffiti Wall is a great way to connect with their target market experientially. It's hi-tech, high impact and engaging - something that will be remembered, talked, blogged and tweeted about for months.

The Digital Graffiti Wall is fully customizable. Painting stencils, screen overlays and the digital graffiti cans can be branded to enhance your on-site message. Live image capture and printing, email a friend as well as uploading to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter with hash tags are all possible too.

Alex, this is awesome. How were the pens detected? Is the software all written in Processing?
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
    Thanks Ryan.
We track the pens with an IR cam.
And yes this app was written in processing but, that was actually the last time we used it. Now we have written it in Open Frameworks.
We get much better speed and a more reliable app.

very very cool, it reminds me of new virtual workbenches that are coming out. I wonder what it's live visual (vj-ing) uses could be

    Thinking about it

Wow, this is just amazing. (And the music does fit perfectly, too). Is there any chance you'll ever showcase this graffiti wall in Vienna?
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
If we get invited or there is an event that requires it, for sure. I would love to go to Vienna

Nice... I still am having a learning curve on openFrameworks, and have had some gnarly crashes... but this makes me want to keep giving it a shot! Awesome work as usual...
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
    Thank you George
Judging for the complexity of your QC work you are doing these days, I am sure you could pick it up easily
  • George Toledo plus 3 years ago
Thanks for the faith... and your general "openness" about your process and helpful nature.

It is the stuff like this that I am CONVINCED is the future of art.... it is basically not a "new" media... but it is slowly (and maybe even quickly!) morphing into an entirely new media from what people traditionally expect out of a "computer program".

When people interact with this stuff, it's not like they have in their minds "oh here I am playing with a computer program, la dee da"... it is a powerfully visceral reaction. It is even more attention grabbing to people than video games, internet, etcetera.

I think the fact that the stuff "interacts" with the viewer... and can "blur" so many types of traditional media... is something that brings out the same kind of wonderment that people had when they first saw film, or heard a record (well, maybe not that intense, but as close as we can really get to that in this day and age with an art medium).

I'm sure you have had that experience where people are messing with something and you can see in their faces that they almost can't believe what they are seeing....

To stop digressing.... was it fairly straightforward to port the Processing to openFrameworks, or did you end up having to "recode" a lot of it?

Any plans to make pressure or distance sensitive controls? I'm basically asking if it's possible to flare.
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
    plans?
    lots of plans :)
    and yes it is possible

dunno this seem to be a little laggy while painting but cool idea tho
  •
  • Tyler 3 years ago
Cool... looks just a tad laggy/choppy though... is that frustrating at all or is it no big deal?
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
I don't think it feel frustrating when you us it, but we have been working to get as little lag as possible.
This video was shot the last time we used this app. For the new version we ported graffiti wall to C++ and the speed improvement was great.

  • Huy Le 3 years ago
We use the same app in school, "ActiveBoard"
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
It may be similar but not the same. We programmed this app ourselves
  •
  • kiefer passey 3 years ago
wow, can you also control the drips of the paint, with those pens?
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
Basically it works like a spray can, if you hold it on one spot it will start to drip. We can also control the amount of drips and lengths of them in code.
  • kiefer passey 3 years ago
    thats pretty cool nicee

    Hola Alex,

this is amazing. I can't believe how far it has come since you got started with it. Congratulations on this and all your other applications. They all seem like lots of fun for the user, which I know is part of what you're going for. I agree, this would make a great wii game.

I'm in Mexico and will be back in Vancouver in February. Hope to see you there. A kiss to the whole family.
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
Thank you Sergio. Looking forward to getting together in the new year.

I grew up doing grafitti in Los Angeles and this is something we've always dreamed about growing up. I'm glad its gone from youthful imagination to a physical reality.. When would this become available to the public?..
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
We use it at festivals, so it is available to the public. We haven't done anything in the states yet, most of the installation work we do is local or in Europe. Hopefully this year coming we will have a chance to go to LA, I will make sure to let you know.

  •
  • Michael Parker 3 years ago
Is this kinda like a smart board?
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
    Not really.
It is a rear projection screen and a computer vision system that detects the pens from behind the screen

My old school used to use that exact type of board to teach us, instead of using a black or white board. I've always thought that it should be put to better use.. you guys are great.
  • Will Haslun 3 years ago
yea my school just had those kind of boards installed into every classroom they re awsome. we call them smart boards (dont know their real name) but when the teacher is out or something we do stuff just like this on them. u can do it with your finger as well though and then save it on the computer.
  • Siamese Glass 3 years ago
Ohhh. Okay. I think alot of schools call it different things.. but this digital graffiti is cool, nonetheless.
  • Alex Beim plus 3 years ago
Hey guys we don't use what you are talking about. This is a rear projection screen.

I'll like you to help me trying some kind of digital art, would you? I am also an active artpainter, but not a digital one ...
    Best regards,
