"Carol Of The Bells"---"slleB ehT fO loraC"

I wish I could rewind time to experience New York again...if I rewind the moments back to the beginning then that means they haven't started yet, and I can relive them again, right? haha. Shot with Canon HV30.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Nice man, real dramatic. Loved the final shot of the sky and plane. You really got around, how many days were you there for or at least did it take you to shoot all of that?
  • Matthew Brown plus 11 months ago
I was there for 3 days, but only had time to shoot two of the days, so I was bouncing all over the place, haha. Thanks so much for the nice comment! Merry Christmas.

Really good job. Nice editing, and interesting twist with going in reverse. Only a few, in my opinion, angles were a little unnecessary, but above all, quite dramatic and visually epic. My favorite shots were of the escalator and rockafeller ice rink.
  • Matthew Brown plus 11 months ago
Yeah, I went a little wild on a couple of shots, haha. Thanks for the input, and Happy Holidays man!!

Actually, the HV30 is getting down to about $400-$500 now. It's getting pretty cheap. Thanks for the compliment man! I appreciate it. And Merry Christmas!

Great great work man!!! Did you shoot 24p or 30p on the HV30. Any color correction. Very impressive!
Just got a Jag35 DOF adapter 4 mine and flipping out.
  • Matthew Brown plus 11 months ago
Hey thank you man. I actually shoot in 30p on all my stuff and then render it out in 24. I like the 30p because in post it doesn't really harm anything if I want to slow a clip down. It doesn't give the "ghosting" effect like 24p does. If I knew how to work around that I'd shoot in 24p all the time. Merry Christmas dude!
  • Sami Takieddin plus 11 months ago
Hey Matthew... yeah the ghosting happens because of 24 frames being recorded in a 60i stream (18 progressive frames and 12 interlaced ones in succession). Sony Vegas thinks the clips are 60i and treats them as such.

    Heres how to fix that:
    eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/

Its quite time consuming, but the result is proper 24p video that looks great.

    Hope that helps.

Great video as always. Love your work!
  •
  • alan marino plus 11 months ago
i'm loving 30p too. HV30s rule and so do u.
keep up the good work and move to LA and become a shooter.

    Matthew,

Beautiful video! I've been a video producer for over twenty years and I teach production at a couple of community colleges here in Seattle, so I really admire good work when I see it.

When I first read that you shot this with an HV-30, I assumed that must be some expensive high-end camera. When I looked it up, I was shocked to realize that I spent ten times as much for my camera (the XH-A1), but none of my stuff looks this good.

My HD looks especially crappy on Vimeo. Even though I follow all their instructions for compression and uploading, my video is always really jerky on Vimeo.

Also, my colors are never as rich as what you have achieved, even though I use custom "film look" settings including Steve Dempsey's "Panalook."

Since you are here in Seattle also, would you let me buy you lunch some time and pick your brain a little? Aside from being very creative and talented, I get the impression that you may have some specialized technical knowledge.

I'm developing a Web video production company with a friend of mine, and we may be looking for freelance shooters in the future, so who knows? Anyway, I'd love the opportunity to talk to you. You can reach me at: vaun@u.washington.edu. Also, check out my latest website at: lakeunionhistory.org.

    Merry Christmas,

    Vaun Raymond

Hey thanks man! I did put some of the clips in forward motion to "snap" back into "reality" for a moment. I think the escalator has got to be my favorite shot, too. It was awesome to get the little girl in the pink coat walking by as I approached the top. Thanks for the clip of the week dude!

Matthew, Now that you have owned the HV30 for a while... what are your thoughts on it? Have you worked with the AVCHD format much? I am curious on the performance of AVCHD vs DV/HDV during editing. The Canon HF10 is close to the same price as the HV30 these days.

I'm not as close as you think I am to those people. I'm actually about fifty feet away and have zoomed in. The further away you are from something and have zoomed in on the object the more shallow the focus will get.

You brought back a lot of memories from my visit to NYC 10 years ago. I wish I had a HD camera back then (although I am now going to fish out my old Hi-8 SD Analogue footage and reminisce - may post some more New York from an Aussie's perspective in 1999 when I can edit it). I love short films set to music. The more of these I see the more I want to experiment with my own. Thanks for your film and giving me the desire to keep working to improve my own films.
  • Matthew Brown plus 5 months ago
Thank you! I will look forward to seeing your video! Let me know when it is finished! Take care! P.S. I actually just re-visited my old Hi-8 camera that I used in high school. Lots of awesome memories with it. Thanks for sharing! :)
