Grand Rapids experienced the first SPACE Event on June 10, 2011. The brainchild of Josh Beebe and Josh Marunde, SPACE set out to bring a hybrid event into our orbit. Taking cues from previous events like SiTE:LAB and ArtBattle; as well as giving a nod to traditional galleries, SPACE combined local art, local music, and local spaces. Spaces that are for rent or ready for build-out are targeted to host SPACE. The Joshes, as they are being called, are hoping to host three SPACE Events throughout the summer of 2011.
The organizers said, "We are hosting three one-night special events over the course of this summer. Local artists and local musicians will take over vacant spaces in beautiful downtown Grand Rapids." Their plan is that artists will be influenced by both the space and the music element of the event, stating, "Live music to be performed while the artists do their thing and create on the spot."
In addition to the good art elements, is an element of 'good cause,' a portion of the ticket sales will be donated to local nonprofit organizations. The first event featured nine visual artist and music by Syts, a local pianist, and ticket proceeds were shared with the St. Cecilia Music Center.
The first SPACE Event was located at 140 Monroe in Downtown Grand Rapids. Participating artist Ashley Amaya said, "The two Joshes thought it would be interesting to have some different mediums, so I decided to add a make-up element." Amaya works as a local make-up artist. Other art forms included air brushing on board, brush painting on both traditional canvas and canvas shoes, and tea screened through antique lace directly onto the ground, and more.
As the event wrapped for the evening, Beebe shared with Grand Rapids Social Diary, "Coming into it not knowing what to expect - thinking about what it could be - then seeing what actually worked out, it was amazing. The artists loved it, and so many people showed up to support the event. We're definitely grateful to everyone."
Grand Rapids Social Diary was happy to be at this first of three summer events; we look forward to SPACE #2 on July 8, planned to be on Division Avenue and featuring music by Valentiger.
