iDream.tv Production capturing an An Arts Integration Project sponsored by Arts for Academic Achievement (AAA). Over a six week period 85 ninth grade students at Washburn High School
worked with English teacher, Jim Schmitt, and theater teaching artist, Anton Jones, to
relate to and understand William Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.
The team used an approach called ArtsLiteracy. ArtsLit (artslit.org) uses practices from the theater arts
to engage students in deep interpretations of a text. Students encounter a performance cycle that takes the Shakespeare story off the page to connect it to their lives. As community builds in the classroom, inquiry takes place, and in this way, 21st century youth make meaning of 15th century language, sensibilities and themes in unforgettable ways.
