Anne Enright in Uganda shot on 5DmkII
Man Booker prize winning writer Anne Enright visits the Katine project in Uganda. The project run by aid agency AMREF is sponsored by the Guardian and Barclays bank. More details or make a donation look here guardian.co.uk/katine
A run and gun video shot entirely on a Canon Eos5DmkII with a Nikon 17-35 f2.8, 80-200 f2.8 and Contax/Zeiss 85mm f1.4
There were a number of challenges shooting this video. I didn't have a Matte box wide enough and so the extremely bright light caused my neutral density filters to flare so much I had to give up on them causing higher shutter speeds than I would have liked.
With most of the shots done handheld with a modified Red Rock Micro rig I had to devise a way to see the screen and focus. The solution was a hood-pro hoodsock borrowed from my Sony EX-1 jury rigged to the screen. It works quite effectively allowing shooting in the brightest conditions and you can focus quite well.
Audio was handled entirely by a Sennheiser MKE400D microphone. This wasn't easy as I couldn't monitor it at all. I did a back up recording on my Edirol R-09 for safety.
The result isn't perfect and there is room for improvement but I hope it proves what can be done in a documentary with DSLR video.

I have looked for info on the Sennheiser MKE400D - but can only find reference to a Sennheiser MKE400 (no D on the end) anywhere on the internet ?
Do you have an info on this mic ?
Perhaps a link ?
All the best.
Great work, Dan.
I also got a M2 adpater from redrock, and my nikon lenses will find a new life with the 5D
Nice job !!!
ANY THOUGHTS
Vimeo's conversion to 24fps might be causing this stutter.
If you download the Quicktime file it will show at 30fps.
1. Was this using the redrock adapter again to fit the nikon lenses etc? ( how much did it set you back? - if u dont mind me asking )
2. Did you have any additional lighting / what kind of setup?
3.Would you say that the quality of shots and results your getting from the 5D are beyond what your EX1 is capable of ?
Again - your work has blown me away- and you are producing some of the best footage I have seen from the 5DmkII... keep up the fantastic work - and keep the footage coming! - also would be interested to see you put the Cam to a movement test / on a dolly etc - really just to see the limitations of the rolling shutter and how best to counter it.
p.s. any photos of the rig / setup you had would be awesome.
My mistake it is a MKE400.
Danap,
I used a modified Hoodman 5d lcd pop up cover and attached the Hoodpro to it using gaffer tape. I'm now working on a more permanent version. I'll keep you all posted.
Sebastian,
There is no Red Rock adapter just Nikon to Canon lens adapters. I use the Red Rock support system though. I'll try find somehwere to post pics of my rig
I had already decided to buy the 5D MK II when I noticed the Aliasing which is truly a deal breaker for me. Damn Canon you where so close.
It is just a ridiculous detail in an overall beautiful film.
Don't miss understand me. I like the overall result of the Uganda shot very much. It is really just the Aliasing thing which bothers me a lot. But as you said, most of the people will not even notice it. But then again these people also won’t care about shallow DOF, latitude, resolution, frame rates or proper audio……
Avey
I'm working on documentaries all over the world, shooting on EX3, and eventough the pictures made of the sony cam is really impressive, aint nothing like a
good old cine like DOF...
-Can you tell/show us what does your "modified Redrock" soulder mount/rig look like please ?
I'll much apreciate.
Thank you for sharing.
And by the way, good idea to use the hood pro. Just like on a EX3...
Best regards.
There's a pic of my Red Rock rig here cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=325&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=10
Good idea to mount it on your left shoulder and then be able to look in the viewfinder with the right eye...Thank you very much for sharing your tricks...
Best regards from France
