Ruby-throated Hummingbirds' Translucent-Forked Tongue
11 months ago
In these clips you can see how Hummingbirds drink sugar water. Their tongue extends from their bill into the feeder, the forked tongue opens and captures sugar water, then the tongue retracts inside the bill to release the sugar water and the process continues. I hosted one Hummingbird with a deformed bill which caused his tongue not to work properly but he was still able to use the feeder I provided for him. All other Hummingbirds loved this feeder and he had to fight for his turn but he was tough and survived until migration. I still wonder what happened to him after he migrated from my house.
