As we transition from Final Cut Pro to another NLE, I'm running a series of tests to determine which NLE will best suit our needs.

We have been using the AJA Kona boards for years with FCP so it's really important to me that the board work with whatever new software we go with. Happily I can now run my AJA Kona boards smoothly with CS 5.5 thanks to the new 9.0.1 Plug-In release.

In this walkthrough I show you how to properly set up the AJA Kona board so you can do some testing yourself. It's a little different than what I'm used to from Final Cut Pro, but this brings us one step closer to transitioning away from FCP.

  • We've got a Kona 3 and this makes the switch from Final Cut to Premiere Pro pretty much a no brainer now. Thanks!

P.S. Have you done any testing with dual system audio in premiere yet? Is pluraleyes still needed?

I have not yet. But I have a great little test project that we shot in the shop today that will make a perfect test. I'll report back at some point when we get the chance.

But thank you to AJA for bringing this plug-in set out so fast!

I hope Matrox can get it together with their drivers soon! Spent most of the day unistalling, reinstalling CS5.5, Matrox drivers, etc. Still no external monitor action.

Very cool Walter. I've linked this into Premiere Pro Help documentation here: help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7fa8a.html#ach-setscr

Thanks for posting this test Walter. I haven't yet had the time to test the Kona 3 at our studio with Premiere so this came just in time!

With CS5 Kona LHi and LHe have some playback issues with external monitors. Audio drop out and picture drop out. I purchased CS5.5 but haven't received it yet. Hope it works better with the Kona cards. Are you experiencing any issues with your LHi?

The only audio loss I get is sometimes if I have multiple apps running and something doesn't release the Kona board. Also you know you can download CS 5.5 right now for free right? 30 day trial so you can start using it now and then enter the serial numbers when your copy arrives.

WOW CS5.5 is much better as far as AJA Kona Card play out and audio is concerned. Thanks for the tip on downloading the trial while I wait for the package to arrive. Also rendering less is nice.

How many layers of 1080i video do you get with the AJA board and how many effects etc? I need a robust board for the work i do, at least as good as the Matrox RTX2.
    Thank you!

Video board has nothing to do with layers of video. Very fast and robust RAIDs are what give you the layers. Performance will be more or less the same as the Matrox, although I have no idea how the realtime conversions are with Matrox products. With AJA all the conversions are broadcast quality and realtime

Walter, We do a lot of multi-camera editing and are testing Premiere CS5.5 as an alternative to FCP7 as well.

We use the Blackmagic Decklink card for external monitoring, not AJA, but the setup is very similar.

I have noticed that a multi-camera sequence plays back normally, showing (up to 4) angles in Premiere's multi-camera window when using one of the stock sequence setups, but as soon as I switch to a Blackmagic setup, the multi-camera window goes black.

Have you tested this at all with your AJA setups? Any suggestions?
