    Yeah, something like that - the basic particle system is generated based on bitmap-data.

    This version doesn't render in real-time, I have a low-res version (~3500 particles) which runs almost real-time.

    Nope, this isn't done in a time-line based tool - it's all generated from code using the java-based language 'Processing'. Have a look here: processing.org
