In this portion, Yah tells Avram (later Avraham) to take Sarai (later Sarah) and leave Haran and go to the land of the Cananites. Because of a famine, Avram continues into Egypt where Sarai is captured by Pharaoh; Avram returns to the Negev and Lot his nephew settles in Sodom; there is a war and Lot is taken captive and is rescued by Avram; Malki-Tzedek is given a tithe; Yah cuts a covenant with Avram; Hagar gives birth to Ishmael; Avram turns 99 and Yah appears to him confirms the covenant and requires circumcision of all the men in the household.
