Roadtesting the new Canon EOS 5D
This is my first attempt using the new Canon 5D in video mode. The camera has amazing high def picture quality and great color capture. Most of the footage in this clip is straight from the camera apart from some stylizing in FCP.
Low light capabilities are not as amazing as first reported especially when shooting video, but it kicks my XHA1's proverbial @#^*.
The biggest drawback is not being in full control of the aperture when shooting video. All that lovely depth of field disappears when you hit that record button. Cant understand why Canon haven't picked up on this. Maybe its a technical issue that cant be changed.
We are toying with trialing a fully manual Carl Zeiss lens with it. Stay tuned. christianfletcher.wordpress.com christianfletcher.com.au

is this gonna replace your main camera...
cos the new zealand footage is pretty special..
i know you have about 3 stops more flexibility with the 5d..
but it is a flawed beast.
Bottom line is it's not what you got but how you use it. Your right the 5D is a flawed beast. Why the @#$%^ cant Canon bring out a Sony EX1 killer. Come on Canon pull your finger out.....
I love the 2.10 scene
I've seen some stunning stuff with these cameras and I think the images outweigh the problems. (mind you I haven't actually had one in my hands yet, so that may be a premature statement…
Your images are part of that stunning collection. Thanks for showing us.

Damn you 5D2
We too use the XH-A1's and absolutely love them coming from the hard to work with P2 environment of HVX200A's and love the XH-A1's low light.
Now on the SLR side we use 100% Nikon's and settled in on the D300 and love it. So, as a back up we picked the D90 which appears to be a nice movie selection also. To that end, before picking up the D90 this past week from B&H, we have been studying the 5D MKii very closely and ALMOST bought one on Monday but the Canon guy talked us into the D90 (go figure) as he put it, we'd have to dump all our Nikon gear (several lenses, speedlights, etc.) and all that would get us one D5 and a lens while we'd get movie with the D90 for less than a Canon lens AND as he put it, the next generation cameras are just around the corner that go straight to QT movie files, smaller better high rez files, and equally important larger and better CMOS imagers that will give much lower light capability AND lots more controls.
To this latter accomplishment, SpecComm recently contacted us about a new JVC camera that came out with straight to QT on SD cards (WOW) and heard that Canon is secretly working on some kind of HD video camera that has 1/2" imagers . . now that would improve picture and low light alone besides the rep said, "don't be surprised if you see removable lenses" like the XH camera and for "reasonable price" . . we'll see about the reasonable . . hey?
Just for the heck of it, we'll shoot something equivalent with the D90 (although we'd never get those nice scenes you have) once we're up to speed a little when it arrives Monday but will run it through Avid since we aren't that up on FCP yet. We're learning it but there are just toooooo many things we like about Avid thus far (like native editing for one :o)
Again, loved the piece. Nice work !!
I was waiting for LUMIX GH-1, but overall 5D has more superior (even for dig. stills 21 MP), less jello/wobble effects - what a DSLR beast
