I discovered that if I am in a group of at least five people, one of them has had a car wreck. Upon learning this, I started to record accident stories wherever I went. I interviewed friends, strangers, parents, students, business commuters, rescue heroes, truckers, traffic reporters and drunks. I visited the Georgia Navigator control center, and I flew in helicopters with the reporters on their daily missions. I began to listen more carefully to the thirty-second reports, innocuously broadcast three times daily.
