I had given up on the look of the fs100, thinking it was too video-like until I saw this video. It would be amazing if this look could be achieved in the camera. Can you share some more about the grading? How do find the look from the FD lens?
  • Cody Cha plus 7 months ago
Andy, I must admit -- FS100 footage does look bit video-like. I wasn't too happy with the Sony colors either (compared to Canon). I've been a Canon 5D/7D shooter so the difference was even more apparent. Overall I thought it lacked that organic filmic look.

However, FS100 footage is absolutely amazing in quality. It allows to you to mold it however you'd like it to be. Also, different lenses give different look...EF lenses gives a bit more organic look compared to FD. I was able to pick up some cheap FD lenses. I find them to give very sharp but flat (dimension wise) look. In the long run, I intend to stick with EF lenses that I already have a ton of.

Regarding color grading, I haven't done too much different than I have been doing with DSLR footage. I think it starts with a right picture profile. For this video, I had a particular look in mind before I even shot it. I tried to lift the blacks and highlights. With the colors I was going to more retro feel. Adding grain was a much. FS100 footage is just too clean.
  • Andy Yoong plus 7 months ago
Well you definitely achieved a good look. What grading software are you running?
  • Cody Cha plus 7 months ago
I've applied layers of Looks, Colorista, and RGB curves.

Great look to this video. It's interesting that you're staying with EF lenses for the FS100... how are you solving the aperture problem with the EF lenses since all EF to E mounts are the "dumb" kind.
  • Cody Cha plus 1 month ago
I've got too much invested in EF system to abandon it. :) I also shoot stills so it makes sense to stay with them. Eventually -- maybe in January -- we get a smart adapter for FS100. You do lose some creative ability without the aperture control but I have couple of manual lenses I can fall back on. For the most part, I shoot wide-open or at certain set value.

Hi. I would like to buy this camera, but do you think it is necesary to buy it with the provided lens, or maybe i just buy an adapter and canon/nikon photo lens. Thank you!

I see you like the film-ish look rather than the CNN video look that these camera deliver but don't you think that the overall colors of the video are too dull, washed out ? That is not a criticism because I know that this is the intended color grading purpose. Besides, I also have the 7D, coud you share us which picture profiles do you use and why? From my standpoint, the 7d/5d delivers too saturated colors. Thanks!!
  • SergeSmArt 7 months ago
I'm sure - you are right! I don't like it too.. blacks washed out ..and this GREEN tint all over the film... brr..
I like most of "superflat" profiles I use with 5D2, but they are good for PP .. not for the final film...
This is like women make up: if you notice it - it's not good anymore :)
  •
  • What a brilliant analog feel, superb job mate. What you were using for color correction and for the grain?
  • Cody Cha plus 7 months ago
Thanks, Martynas. I've used a bit of mixture of Looks, Colorista, and RGB curves. And the grain was from Looks.

Great job on exposure, editing, composition and color grading Cody! The final result nailed the retro film look. Reminds me of summer in the 70s!

hey Cody. Beautiful work. I am particularly interested in the smooth quality of your slo mo. Did you shoot in 24 or 60 fps and what was your shutter speed?
  • Cody Cha plus 7 months ago
Rick, I shot it in the S&Q mode, which is 24p overcranked at 60fps. For shutter speed, I was pretty much high as I needed to be to get the correct exposure -- it was somewhat of norm to be at 1/1000 or faster. Though it's definitely not a bad thing when shooting slowmo.

How did you control the diaphragm CANON EF lenses
  • Cody Cha plus 6 months ago
The only way to set the aperture is using a DSLR by using the DOF preview button. I've just got them set at certain aperture and using it as is.

How did you use different brands of camera lens? Which adapter (s)? The auto focus is lacking with the use of lens adapters?

I have the same camera. I am having a hard time finding which adapter to buy for my EF lenses. Can you point mw in the right direction? I heard Birger is making one that allows auto focus and aperture control but it's going to be around $600. Also, do you think FD lenses would be good choice and would work with my Tokina 11-16 and Canon EF 50 1.4. IF so, what adapter for FD lenses would you recommend? Thanks everyone.
  • Jeremy Wilker plus 5 months ago
Hey Chris- I used Canon FD lenses on the feature TRIUMPH67 (triumph67film.com) and for that project they were great. The Novoflex adapter I have for Nikon is amazing so I'd assume their FD mount would be good.

Love it. Love it to bits. The 'polaroid' look, the gentleness of the portraits, the little bits of sound design, the catch of little moments.

And technically, yes - very interesting! Thanks for sharing these details, which I'm sure will help and encourage many new-FS100-users out there, but let's not detract from a lovely little film!

Very nice indeed. I was most struck by the faded color and greenness. As Matt Davis mentioned, it is kind of a Polaroid look, which I think is an aesthetic unto itself. It creates a certain nostalgia and filmish aspect that is really quite pleasing for me. Congratulations. The camera, filming, and editing are first rate.

Hey Cody, on one of your other videos you said your picture profile was posted here.... am I missing it? I'm really interested to see what you've done! Amazing video!
  • Cody Cha plus 3 months ago
Hey Tony, sorry I took down the info and now I can't remember the exact settings. It was one of the settings recommended in this video: blog.abelcine.com/2011/06/17/sony-nex-fs100-dynamic-range-test/

Since then, AbelCine have published a handful of scene files. For this particular shoot, it was first time using the FS100. I was mainly trying to avoid clipping the highlights under the harsh midday sun. The look/style was achieved mainly in the post.
