“Bit by Bit” is a documentary feature about video gaming, as told by scholars, developers and reviewers themselves. With the rise of casual gaming, more people are playing video games then ever before, and it is important to objectively look at this $20billion/year industry, its practices, and how this exciting medium is transforming our lives.
Intended to be both an educational documentary as much of a “how-to” break into the industry, “Bit by Bit” hopes to define the role of video games as a legitimate art form that warrants proper journalism and criticism.
“Bit by Bit” hopes to touch upon a multitude of thematic elements within the production of the documentary. These topics include, but are not limited to the following ideas:
Documenting the process of Video Game journalism in the American game industry, and the lack of credible reporting in traditional media. How Web 2.0 and Video Game journalism converge. Are video games becoming experiential to the point of being outside objective reviewing?
A cultural expose on major events (PAX, E3, GDC), and how the gamer community has begun to drive development vs. the traditional model of how the industry drives the consumer base (IE: PSN, XNA Dev, etc.).
Developers from various studios talk about their creative process, and the trappings of bringing a new intellectual property to market. How do delivery systems (DLC, on-demand gaming, Steam, etc.) drive development choices?
Interviews with leading intellectuals contextualizing the role of video games in their respective fields.
