Sony HDC-3300 HD Super Motion Camera at Boston Bruins Hockey
11 months ago
Check out my website at: tomguilmette.com
I shot a quick and dirty behind the scenes at the Boston Garden yesterday while we set up for the Bruins game.
I have the privilege of using the $130,000 Sony HDC-3300 HD SuperMo broadcast camera. I find this technology very interesting and I have tried to explain it in layman's terms.
UPDATE: Someone emailed me...I was a little low with the retail price, the camera actually retails for $270,000.00 without the lens. If you do not believe me, look here: news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room /b2b/broadcast_production/release/9092.html ...But maybe you can get it used for $130,000?
This short explains how the camera works, how it is recorded/played back and why it is important to be able to capture fast action sports at 90 frames per second.
I have also written two blogs about this camera on my website, please check out:

Game footage courtesy of New England Sports Network. Sorry it is in standard def and 4:3, I did not have time to get it off the HD melt reel.

This is from making a so-called "B" unit, so not quite as big or as much wire. But still a ton.
How does this camera compare to the RED, that shoots at 120fps for a fraction of the cost?
there is another group of high speed cameras that use CMOS chips like the RED that sports networks call X-MO. you see this stuff at the super bowl. these retro-fitted "frankencams" were taken out of the crash test envirnment and put in the broadcast environment to record sports at super high frame rates like 1000 FPS. watch the show "time warp" on discovery to see more of this.
i guess to explain all this i will have to make another video, i use these cameras occasionally and they cost just as much as the hdc-3300...stay tuned.
i have shot with the RED and it is quite amazing for the price tag. i will be one of the first to own the SCARLET.
they say you learn something everyday.
i cant imagine what it would be like to own
such an expensive camera.
i feel lucky to have the vixia hv-30
great video.
Subscription added.
