37. Sony HDC-3300 HD Super Motion Camera at Boston Bru…
11 months ago
Check out my website at: tomguilmette.com

I shot a quick and dirty behind the scenes at the Boston Garden yesterday while we set up for the Bruins game.

I have the privilege of using the $130,000 Sony HDC-3300 HD SuperMo broadcast camera. I find this technology very interesting and I have tried to explain it in layman's terms.

UPDATE: Someone emailed me...I was a little low with the retail price, the camera actually retails for $270,000.00 without the lens. If you do not believe me, look here: news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room /b2b/broadcast_production/release/9092.html ...But maybe you can get it used for $130,000?

This short explains how the camera works, how it is recorded/played back and why it is important to be able to capture fast action sports at 90 frames per second.

I have also written two blogs about this camera on my website, please check out:

and

Game footage courtesy of New England Sports Network. Sorry it is in standard def and 4:3, I did not have time to get it off the HD melt reel.

I soo love you for taking us into detail with these things. I always wanted to know how they use all that super expensive stuff, and what's inside these big trucks.
You are quite a privileged man when you can use that!

I really enjoyed the video. I spent two summers wiring two TV trucks that are similar to the one you went inside. It's pretty amazing technology that goes into one of those things, and pretty high pressure for the people inside, I'm sure.

    Great, informative video.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 10 months ago
i have met a few of the people who wire these 53 foot tractor trailer trucks and i have alot of respect for them and what they do. you guys run like 5 miles of cable and have to put thousands of ends on each of the cable runs to make the signal flow correctly!
  • Nicholas Dunn 10 months ago
I actually have some pictures from the process if anyone's interested:

    facebook.com/album.php?aid=2005650&l=752fe&id=4602397

This is from making a so-called "B" unit, so not quite as big or as much wire. But still a ton.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 10 months ago
thanks for that posting nick. there really is miles and miles of copper in those trucks.

  • Peter Hoare 10 months ago
What kind of shutter speeds do you use with this?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 10 months ago
i ask for just 1/60. the higher you go, the harder it is for me to shoot because my electronic viewfinder gets all "jittery". that give me a major headache.

  • Sune Eskelinen plus 10 months ago
This was both interesting and funny at the same time. We had a EVS on my school, it was fun; even if we couldn't record real slow motion because the cameras was 50i.
  •
  • Ricky Norris 10 months ago
that was awesome thanks for that!

    Awesome video!

How does this camera compare to the RED, that shoots at 120fps for a fraction of the cost?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 10 months ago
this camera is a broadcast high definition television camera. the RED is a digital cinema camera. two different things for two different purposes.

there is another group of high speed cameras that use CMOS chips like the RED that sports networks call X-MO. you see this stuff at the super bowl. these retro-fitted "frankencams" were taken out of the crash test envirnment and put in the broadcast environment to record sports at super high frame rates like 1000 FPS. watch the show "time warp" on discovery to see more of this.

i guess to explain all this i will have to make another video, i use these cameras occasionally and they cost just as much as the hdc-3300...stay tuned.

i have shot with the RED and it is quite amazing for the price tag. i will be one of the first to own the SCARLET.

Great video as usual Tom! can you explain how the focus works in a situation as quick as that shot? Also, did you zoom in on the puck and then zoom out right as he shot? that would be tough to judge!
