An 18 minute high definition tour around Canon's latest full-frame DSLR, the EOS 5D Mark II, by Gordon Laing, Editor of cameralabs.com.

Note the video clips from the 5D Mark II were inserted directly into a Premiere Pro CS4 timeline, and the pans were smoother on the original file. I've posted one of the clips in its original format on vimeo for you to download if you like.

Our full review of the EOS 5D Mark II, with sample images and many results compared with the EOS 5D, Sony A900 and Nikon D700 can be found at cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II/

If you have any questions regarding this review, feel free to post on the Cameralabs forum! We have a thread about H.264 editing here: cameralabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11385

Great, thorough review, Gordon. Appreciate the information.

I noticed that even at 18 minutes the quality of this video is astounding. How did you get the quality so clear with such a large project size? I discovred intense desaturation when uploading my last project...

    Thanks, Gordon!

Hi Caleb, glad you liked the video! Sadly vimeo don't allow non-US residents to have plus accounts, so I was up against the 500GB wall. I actually came pretty close with some default settings though. I exported from Premiere CS4 using the default WMV settings, but with the resolution set to 1280x720 / 30fps. This delivered a 650MB ish file, so I just slightly reduced the average bit rate, and my next attempt came out at 496MB - pretty lucky huh? I think the quality looks ok considering the high compression because much of the content is still and on a plain background. That stuff compresses easily... PS - I initially tried exporting to H.264 as recommended by the FAQs, but it didn't work as well as WMV for me.

Hey Gordon, thanks for the valuable info One question please . For movies how good is the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM vs the canon 24 105 that was on the camera ?
  • Gordon Laing plus 3 years ago
Hi Craig, I've not tested the 28-135mm, so can't comment. I can tell you the 24-105mm is a high quality lens though, and that you'd need something good like this to make the most of the 5D2's stills capability, but if you're only going to be shooting video, a lower-end lens like the 28-135mm should be ok.

Great review - really appreciate the video section and clip.
As a videographer that uses camcorders that have auto settings, they nearly always have to be disabled for action sequences. Won't be able to pan video with this camera and zooming is problematic too. It seems bizarre to make a video camera with such high quality in single frames and such terrible quality/consistency across frames.

Gordon will you ,and can you suggest a nikkor lens vs canon lenses to go with the camera for more manual control? and do nikkor lenses take full advantage of the 9 focus points of the this camera (AF?)

Thanks for your comments everyone! Hi Craig, I haven't personally tried any Nikkor lenses on the Canon body via an adapter, so can't say, but there are a few folk on vimeo who have used them on the Mark II, who will be better-equipped to comment!

Gordon, they now offer vimeo plus worldwide. Thanks for the info. You may want to invest in a Lav mic for better audio. It will add some punch to your instructional videos. You can actually plug one in directly to the camera without investing in a wireless system. I'm planning on buying this camera specifically for the video, so I need as much info as I can handle.

Gordon, in the video it sounded like you mentioned that the lens was a 24-205mm lens, and to check it out on your web site, but I can't find that lens, are you sure thats the one, or is it the 24-105mm lens?

thanks for the demo. i've been trying out the canon 5d mark two and i was wondering if there are any codec exporting tricks. my footage seemed jumpy once in final cut. i have the latest mac pro towers and edit HDV footage all the time. for some reason the footage seems to stutter? when i watch it in the camera it does fine? what kind of flash cards did use while shooting in video? i thought maybe if i re-formated the footage it might help? any helpful tips?

Hi Aaron, H.264 is hard to edit smoothly on any system. We have to put up with choppy playback while editing, in the knowledge it'll be ok in the final render! We have some tips and comments in the Cameralabs forum here though: cameralabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11385

PS - sorry for the delay in replying Chris, yes, it was the 24-105mm. Did I say 24-205mm?!
