NOW IN HD!

One of my first real attempts at effectively using OpenGL and OpenFrameworks. I incorporated additive blending, a frame buffer, binning, and fft spectrum analysis.

It's a great visual composition that
    matchs sound and visuals effectively.

yea, it looks super nice when it is between being spead out and grouped together! thanks for the comment!

When you download the source, how do you open it?
  • andrew mahon 3 years ago
you need to use a c++ IDE, code blocks on windows, and xcode on os x. you also need openFrameworks. lemme know if you need more help, and i can try to dig a tutorial up for you!

this looks very similar to itunes's new visualizer on V.8.0.2. must be done with some of the same programming. nice work, you should figure out how to get the smoke properties to add in with the spheres.
  • andrew mahon 3 years ago
hey, thanks for the comment. what exactly do you mean?
  • Zach Kahl 3 years ago
if you watch that visualizer there is an really impressive smoke effect. almost a misty fog. just thinking that its also an effect you might love to learn. are you familiar with the visualizer i am talking about? if so, pay attention to the smoke. thats all. good work!

What do the numbers in the top left represent?
  • andrew mahon 3 years ago
    thanks for the comment!

the number in the top left corner is the framerate at which the software that created the video was running at. it has no bearing to the framerate that the video you are seeing plays at!
  • Terry B 3 years ago
    Ah, cool. Thanks!

    I was just curious.

  • Frango Ssauro 3 years ago
Amazing. The tail is not really smooth, but i think it's running real-time :B

    Actually, what is "binning"?
  • andrew mahon 3 years ago
Binning is a method where you divide the particles into smaller 'bins' based on location, in order to reduce the number of other particles that they have to check themselves against. The source code file binner.h/binner.cpp takes care of this.
  • andrew mahon 3 years ago
oh, and yep, it was running ~37 fps, hence the choppy tails

I've downloaded the source and tried compiling in Code-Blocks in windows and X-code in macos. It compiles...but it doesn't seem to run. Do i need a good graphics card to run it? And i noticed, force.h is an empty file.
  • andrew mahon 3 years ago
Yeah, force.h is empty, it really shouldn't be there. I didn't take much time to clean the code before I posted it.

I have noticed that the code doesn't run on many computers either. It was developed on a Mac Pro. My suspicion is that it has to do with the Frame Buffer, but I am not sure. I will ask around and see what I can figure out.

I will keep you posted! Thanks for the comments.
