See all Show me
It snowed pretty hard over the past week so I seized the opportunity to capture some of the magic. The usual XHA1/Letus Ultimate combo. Shutter was set to 1/150 for most of these shots. I find this to be a nice setting to capture the falling snow.

Some of the shots need to be color corrected (they are a little on the blue side) and I'll do that when I get time...

    As usual... GREAT!
Did you use a zoom or did you change the lenses so quickly?

sorry i should have been more clear, what do you use to capture? do you use a capture card, firestore/ firewire to computer, or just firewire to computer because your a1 footage always looks superb, like it hasn't lost any quality.
  • Steven Dempsey 11 months ago
    Just FireWire to computer...nothing special.

I often wonder if the quality loss is less because of the 35mm adapter. What I suspect is that because of the DOF of the adapters, more of the image is out of focus and softer. This is a lot easier for the algorithms in the compression to calculate so therefore the overall quality is more accurate.

    Nice video thanks steve

Montauk, if you capture and edit native HDV (meaning you don´t convert it into an intermediate codec) you don´t lose any quality. It´s digital information, that´s being copied to the harddrive, the quality of the capture-device doesn´t influence that at all.

When you add effects like a color correction and render, you lose a generation. For that it is better to have a good lossless codec like DNXHD (Avid) or ProRes422 (Final Cut Studio 2). I´m don´t know about Premiere.

But as long as you are just editing the original HDV, you are working with exactly the same information, that´s on the tape.

Excellent! You have acted from noble motives.
What did you use a zoom lens?
  • Steven Dempsey 11 months ago

Congratulations Steven it´s really sweet and charming this video. What font did you use in the title? I guess it wasn´t easy for you to get children not to throw snowballs when you were recording!
  •
  • Hi Steven. I tried doing the same with m2 over 150s and you can see the ground glass. Does the Letus let you go above 150?

Nice one Steven, I always get the feeling that this is how OUR winters should be here in the North of England, but it rarely happens. hey ho.

    Nice one.

Nice! Relaxing to watch - the music sets the mood, even with the kids running and playing about, it slows down the pace. Not to mention that great Letus.

    Great stuff!!!

how do you get your videos to appear "extra wide" ?

and if your footage is a little blue, there are some good presets you can find online for the xh-a1.. some more blue and some more red than others.....

Nice work Steven. I did the same thing last Saturday. I used the True Color preset on the XHA1...I wish the snow had been falling though:

Charming, and sweet and the music lent itself so well to that feeling. I liked how you ended it too...I am not sure how it is up there, but down here in PDX, its all green again. Bittersweet...

What did you cover your camera with while shooting? I'm sure you had some kind of shelter!
  • Steven Dempsey 11 months ago
Not a single shot was outside. It was all shot from various windows in my house.

Beautiful work! Helps me look forward to, instead of being terrified of, my children becoming teens. Hoping to survive the whole ordeal. Ha!
