The Duke Summer Reading Academy is a Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools program that will launch in Summer 2011. The program will serve the 60 students who participated in the 2010-11 Afterschool Reading Academy, building upon the academic intervention provided during the school year.
Hosted on Duke University’s West Campus, the Duke Summer Reading Academy will provide participants an engaging, enriching summer experience that will not only prevent summer learning loss but further build reading comprehension and a love of reading. The six-week program, led by literacy teachers and staffed by trained and paid Duke University student interns, will feature the Freedom Schools Integrated Reading Curriculum in addition to the many cultural and recreational activities available on campus.
