Very cool. One question though, what's with the jello-cam going on at the end (1:20-1:25)?

I'm guessing it was a DSLR mounted on the helo, right?
  • Mutiny Bikes plus 7 months ago
Yes, 7D so it had some jello when pointed down... Just need to work on it a bit more
  • Chris Conti plus 7 months ago
Not at all, looks awesome as is. Great job.

(how hard was it to learn to fly the helo? looks like a ton of fun!)
  • Christian Anderson 7 months ago
The Foundry makes a plugin to correct rolling shutter (jelly wobble) from CMOS sensors. I haven't tried it but it may help.
  • Hamish Newey 7 months ago
rolling shutter is different to jelly wobble
  • Joe Simon Films plus 7 months ago
Yes, you can't fix rolling shutter like this in post.

Chris, it's scary to fly and has taken me 8 months of training and about 10 or so bad crashes.
  • Chris Conti plus 7 months ago
Hey Joe, thanks very much for replying. I'm looking to get into flying helis myself (starting out very small, of course, and I understand there's a LOT of time, money and learning to do before you can graduate to something of this size). I'm wondering, what model heli was that? Did you build it, or buy it complete with the camera mount, etc?
    Again, great job!

It was only a matter of time before this happened, Now that just tells me that the next full length Mutiny video is going to have some crazy ass shots!!

    Awesome edit for sure!!

How do you monitor the recording? Just a wide lens and guessing? Aren't you scared you can crash the 7D and a lens into a ground? How safe you feel about it?
  • Mutiny Bikes plus 7 months ago
Yes, we have a downlink with monitor and separate controller for the 3 axis camera mount.... On this shoot though I did not have a camera op so had to fly blind.

A crash could happen, you have to be willing to risk it for the shots..... But of course. You need omits of training and practice before you can even fly something of this size
  • Daniel May-Miller 7 months ago
You answered my question... Was gonna suggest a separate remote 3-way for the camera as they all seemed to be static shots (static compared to the heli's orientation) but you're already there.... Would love to see some more footage with an op operating too!

  • Rustic Red Studio plus 7 months ago
If you're going to fly with a 7D you might as well use a t2i, lighter and you won't get the jelly effect. 7D and t2i are very very similar when it comes to the video side of things.
  • Joe Simon Films plus 7 months ago
Lighter yes, less jello no.... That is all in the heli head speed and will be adjusted and fixed before the next shoot
  • Chris Conti plus 7 months ago
Joe, could you expand on that? The jello is caused by the helo? How so? And how do you fix it?

    Great work, by the way...

Joe I'm interested in getting into this type of filming in Australia, I like the stuff that Vortex arial are doing also. Can you tell me where you went to get your heli? I'd like to do a costing.
  • josh@firestorm 7 months ago
i've priced this sort of thing before, and you're looking anywhere up to and between $10,000-$20,000 USD depending on frames, motors, controls, mounts, etc you use.

Joe that was unreal! That is the first time I have ever seen a heli used like that in BMX. I've had the chance to fly my 7d with an RC heli for a few moto edits I've done, but this is so, so well done. I cannot wait to see more of this.
