this is the third and final version of the short ive made. many thanks to Jason R. Johnston (vimeo.com/jrjphoto) for volunteering to re-record the once pitiful narration.

filmed on a canon hv30 with a raynox wide angle, and a rode videomic that didn't really come in handy much

Soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and James Newton's "Vespertilio"

    like the movement
  • Mark Kammel plus 10 months ago
believe it or not, the movement is easy to do, you just gotta know how to operate the camera (that is, how not to operate it) and know how to use zooming as a tool to make people look fast. the runner in the black coat is not fast and runs like a goose (or at least we make fun of him that way), yet one wouldnt realize it from the film.

I really like this. It makes me feel good to know how polished the results from the HV30 can be. The cold/snow gives this a very Bourne Ultimatum feel which was heightened by the mixing of the location audio when you had a runner at 0:55 hiding/peeking behind the car.

The only thing that threw me off was the voice over. It definitely told the story, but it the voice/reading didn't seem to fit the mood. I'd have liked it to be more gritty/colder sounding.
  • Mark Kammel plus 10 months ago
im making a final version with a better voice over. another chap on vimeo noticed it and it volunteering to professionally record the audio. he is also a producer at FOX, so im expecting good stuff, stay tuned for the final version.

i hoped it would make sense, and i guess it does. thank you so much to making the final version way better! and thanks for supporting 0-budget indie filmmaking!

This final version knocks my socks off--it's incredible! Great work!

I still cannot get over the awesome cinematography. The money shot is definitely at 01:15. Very well thought out.

    Phenomenal stuff.

thanks man, i appreciate it! lets just hope the film school's I'm applying to like it just as much!
  • Jackson Miller 7 months ago
What sorts of film schools are you applying to that accept actual film? All the ones I am applying to will not take even a single look at your portfolio and will only look at your essays and short scripts following their prompts.
  • Mark Kammel plus 25 days ago
I realize that this response has a 6 month delay, as I did not see it until now. But my portfolio for applying to massart was mainly film/video and this was in it, and i got in (and im a freshman now :-P)

Thanks for the visit to the site Mark. I love this short, great pacing and writing. I have to say your VO talent was spot on, nothing forced and all natural. Great work.

Very nice cinematography for using an HV30. Like someone above said, very Bourne-esque. I did not see too much skew/jellow cam even with all of that movement which surprised me. Did you have to throw out any shots because of those problems?

Anyways, bravo. Not really much of a story, but that's not what you were going for.

yeah that was great,i liked it and i even liked the voice over, dont know why some complain,of course it couldve been a little grittier but hey it was cool nevertheless.

ive got two questions, first is what do you think about the wide angel adapter.ive already seen the raynox and was thinking about buying it but i couldnt find any opinions on that one.tell me about your personal experience with it.

and second question is about rode videomic, are you happy with it?
  • Mark Kammel plus 6 months ago
    sorry for the ridiculous delay.

the rode videomic is a great addition, but you should always swap out new batteries for every shoot or you may find that your audio quality may deteriorate. i also recommend a boom pole with it.
  •
  • Ilker Durmaz 7 months ago
and oh yeah :D which raynox adapter did you use here?

    thx !
  • Mark Kammel plus 7 months ago
the raynox wide angle to me is a must, the viewing width of the hv20/30 is pitiful, the videomic is also a great addition too.

i forget the model i have (sorry!)

How did you add the letter boxes? Great Great short man. Awesome work.
  • Mark Kammel plus 6 months ago
almost any normal editing program can do this, there should be a letterbox effect, even imovie can.

Great stuff! THAT is what I bought my HV30 for
  • Mark Kammel plus 4 months ago
indeed it is! i love seeing the limits i can push my hv30 to, and it's great to see and know that if you do it right, you can really break out of the consumer camera feeling.

  • henriquedesousa 4 months ago
Fantastic! This short video really made me want to get up and shoot some stuff with my HV30. Thanks for that.
  • Mark Kammel plus 4 months ago
Wow, awesome! It's nice to know I've inspired you in some way, whether direct or indirect. Now go show the world that you don't need extremely expensive equipment to be a filmmaker!

I liked it. Well edited and the color was great.

I think that the "Lion" would have seemed more intimidating if he wasn't crouching behind the cars, but rather walking upright and stoicly - completely cold and in control.
  • Mark Kammel plus 3 months ago
We're both at fault here. There are 3 people in this short, for some reason 2 of them are dressed the same and we didnt catch that when we filmed. The one who fires the two shots at the end isnt anywhere else in the short.

So i did basically follow your direction, you just didnt catch it.
