Every Leica lens is hand-crafted and goes through meticulous manufacturing processes to uphold the quality and precision that Leica defines and customers have come to expect. In the age where technology almost inevitably means mass manufacturing, Leica products are still made with exacting precision by the hands of highly-trained technicians.

This video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship and making of Leica lenses in the production facilities of Leica Camera AG.

This video doesn't even do it any justice!

Holding a Leica M9 with a 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M nearly made me cry! Hahaha it's beyond beautiful and perfect. It makes any other DSLR camera and lens combination feel useless.

Thank you for posting this ... brings back memories of seeing this first hand during the last Leica Akademie english language course on the M with Hildegrard Frisch and Verena Frye in August 1999, and again with Mari Jo and Eberhard Kuehne, Ralph Hegenauer of Leica + Mark Comon in 2005

Beautifully done. I haven't been to the factory in Germany but it would be a great experience to take a tour. All of my Leicas are before digital so I'm sorry to say they never get used. Perhaps one day, an M9 will happen. TschuB!

Now, I know that why Leica is expensive because of these hard meticulous manufacturing processing.
Next time, if I win the lottery, without any doubts, I go and buy a Leica camera.
Thank you for sharing this video.

Motion graphics were weak and distracting, the shots were mediocre at best, the music was the only thing that kept me from hitting stop. I was expecting much better from the name Leica, oh well.

It left me wanting to see more of the actual process, THAT was very interesting.

So hand-crafted means assembling machined parts by hand, ok.
  • Micah 7 months ago
Yes, but they're GERMAN hands! Other countries are populated by robots these days. Ya?
  •
  • aColourfulLife 7 months ago
    Oh those German hands!

Well, I guarantee no human carved that glass by hand to make the lenses and you clearly see a milling machine carving serial numbers.

If you look at this video by canon you see a nearly identical process for their lens construction:

    canon.com/camera-museum/tech/l_plant/index.html

I think this video by Leica and it's hip words like skilled craftsman are just an attempt to justify expensive lenses.

The real reason why Leica's cost so much is because people are willing to buy them on name alone. It's no different than buying flashy jewelry or a luxury vehicle.

Note, I'm not saying that Leica is of crappy quality, I just don't think their level of quality dictates how much they charge.

= hello, I did like the process & the film but I miss something dearly - I can't read the small print. It's there almost ever time when the readable subtitles show up.
    - I would be grateful for explanation
  • jgrzmmm 7 months ago
I guess it's supposed to be unreadable, looks like kind of typographic fetish of the person creating this video. Doesn't add any value to the video, probably 1080p wouldn't help ..

so now u can sell it at any price. after all is "made in germany" and is so so hard and perfect. the hands are faster than the eyes, I can't see where, but something is not just that perfect, maybe the price.
  • Patrick McLoad pro 3 months ago
The Germans (Leica) have to compete in the lens marketplace just like the Japanese, and more often than not, they lose a huge market share because of price. That's just the way it is. Price their lenses too high and they are out of business. German-made does not now mean what it used to. No one forces you to buy Leica.

Those Germans... they may be a stubborn & uptight bunch, but damn they know how to build the best lenses, best motion-pictures cameras, and the best cars to carry all of it. Hat's off.

That was an amazing trip. Its great to see that the Noctilux is hand made to justify its price tag. Such an amazing lens. Had the chance to use my friend's M9+Noctilux combo..I'll never be impressed with a huge dslr ever again. The images that comes out of it is unbelievable. Here's a video I shot using the Noctilux F0.95 attached on a Nex 5N, youtube.com/watch?v=UlqG_rcfoFY&feature=plcp&context=C32117caUDOEgsToPDskI8l2E6cHKRuq3wQlooMNar
