A short film I completed in December 2008. Probably the last of what I would call my "basic" age of filmmaking. Made for film school applications, didn't go so well. However, it did fill up my resume with film festivals and awards. I'm a bit embarrassed about this floating around, but I guess it'd be nice for people to see where I've ended up over the years.

Directed by Ryan Jenq
Based on a poem by K. Jared Hosein
Narrated by Lyndon Holland
"Of One Less Light" by Swansaw
Special Thanks to Nick Del Gaudio and Jonathan Figueroa

awesome...I really enjoyed it, keep up the good work. Also, what audio setup were you using to record the narration?
  • Ryan Jenq 3 years ago
    Thanks for the comment man.

I personally didn't work on the narration, but it's basically just microphone recording with bass boost.

This was really good man. If only, it was a bit longer...but that wasn't your fault considering the fact that you took it from an actual poem.

    Is it my fault then...

Oh and one more thing, just out of curiosity, what mic did you use to record that voice-over? It sounds clean and crisp.

Hey, thanks man I appreciate it.

I didn't record them personally, but my friend says he owns a Rode NT1A and a SM58 but doesn't remember which one he used.

    Thanks again for the comment.

Ah that's great, because I own a Rode mic as well and it's nice to hear such great quality come from the Rode. No problem man, you should post up some more videos! I like your style.

    This wasn't that good

You took bits of lines and just showed us what they literally are

For example: He talks about growing and being 5'4" and you show a ruler that says "here" at 5'4". Honestly, I can see that in my head and if you're going to make an artistic film based on a video you should do something artful. Not just take everything literally. I couldn't find a shot that represented everything this poem stood for, only a collection of shallow shots based on each line. Also, it's not your story so it seems like you didn't put much work into it.

Only good thing is the video and audio quality looked were good.

    what camera were you using?

I agree completely, though I find some of the ways you explained yourself pretentious, mainly the talk about being 'artful' and 'representing' stuff.

But yeah, I did take everything literally, and I could have found more creative ways to do all of them. This was a quickie to occupy my time and I really did not put much work into it. I wish I did it differently but, what's done is done and it's received a much higher amount of praise than I expected it to, so I'm not complaining.

Shot on HV20 btw. Thanks for the comment.
  • Yes, very pretentious of you, Sheldon.

I think you have a lot of potential, Ryan.

    :D
