Clark Haggins muses about his long ago past as an L.A. Musician hanging out at Madame Wongs down on Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica til the wee hours of the morning and checking out bands like Blasphemous Yellow and "The Chance'...."It was 1986 and early 87'" says Higgins "and i was 21 years old,..just old enough to drink,...this was like before i was really even in Greenhouse effect....i was still in the three piece 'Soul Clinic' - these are the long ago distant days ...they are very dim in my memory files now of my brain,..very grim, very dim faded days ,..but when i begin to really think about it,..they become alive(the memories)" ..."I can remember sleeping in my room -actually it was really my brother Bert's room downstairs at 251 (my parents had let me take it over in an apparent effort to give the BH a hint to maybe leave and move out(Laughs) ..ofcourse i quickly set up my drums in there and me and Steve may have feebily tried to jam in there once.." anyway, ,..in 1986,..it was like 7 or 8 in the morning when suddenly "BAM BOOM !! CRUNCH" - I was riveted suddenly awake by my brother Doug smashing my door in with an axe,..breaking the door off it's hinges!! he came into my room and jumped on me , angrily spitting in my suddenly awake face that if that Steve Stepanian guitar guy ever calls the house again - that he was gonna like kick my ass or kill me or something,..i remember when he left he just said ; now,..fix that fucking door!" (Laughs) ..." i can chuckle about this shit now today" says Hagins ",..but these really are the little big things that earned me all the bad luck, bad timing, and disrespect n all,..the bad life and shit where i couldn't get a chick n all...guys like my brother Doug sent me off on a bad walk of life"
Turns out that all it was that morning was Steve was calling on the phone ..i guess too early for THE DH.... along with this guy named Anton Chovit who played bass or it coulda been this other bassist from Torrance named Doug Nolan,...they were just tryin' to set up a jam and they were tryin' to talk to my brother on the phone to go down and wake Shark up cause they needed to talk to me" BUT EVERYBODY SHOULD KNOW THAT I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON (LAUGHS) AND FOR THE MOST PART NIETHER IS 251"...
,..ANYWAY, back to Madamme Wongs West, West L.a.
"i remember i got on Blasphemous Yellow's rock band mailing list probobly about 86' or 87'" says Hagins
'I remember one night i was sittin' there tellin' them all about 'A Noise Agency' and Minutemen and they were like "yeah,..dude we've heard of them - OFCOURSE !!
In like 85 and 84', me and Stevo Stepanian would book our shows at Madamme Wongs because that's where the Twisters and the Jades played - those bands ofcourse from Redondo Beach and the south bay..."anyway,...i was a young drunk, ..learning about how to become another champian alcoholic dude,..but i was real small, a real little guy who was only like 5 foot 5, real dis-respected,..even outright hated,..but Steve Stepanian,..he liked me because i was an obvious great drummer and i was into the Who and Kieth Moon n all,..Ginger Baker...
ANYWAY,..BACK TO 'sOUL cLINIC' ,..our band - me and Stevo's - concept was this 'power trio' ...We were like incredible...I would sing lead and we would get whomever we could on bass at any given night as Ted was very Flakey (Laughs)...i would bash the drums like Moonie and Steve was like - i donno- Eric Clapton on Crack or something like that (Laughs),..we were like Cream but we mixed it with high energy punk - this was all before G.e. keep in mind ; I guess 'we were' the original grunge - not G.e. (Laughs)...We would get this dude named Pat Farger i think his name was,..from the Detonators; he would play bass,...and it was weird because one night he told me he respected Ingwie Malmsteen ?? (Laughs) ,..i guess that was just the mid 80's..."
One night at Wong's, i discovered Blasphemous Yellow and....
