In 1986 and 87', Los Angeles's Greenhouse Effect were just starting out...pioneering a loud guitar sound and screaming lead vocals that would turn to singing nicely. The band was just a three piece power trio and were lead upfront by frantic grunge guiartist Phil Keegan. Keegan was a great lead player and he grabbed much attention and made quite a name for himself as he aped guitarists like Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page.....Keegan basically developed an original sounding style of leads and wrythms that even went beyond his idols....but it was when Keegan stepped on the "Power chords" that things went WHAM POW CRRRUNCH !!! Keegan had an annoying Wah Wah peddle that he sported at every live gig but he would use it as a fierce ear splitting weapon of mass destruction ! By turning down the trebble and upping the midrange and bass knobs on his Fender Amps, Keegan created magic!! ...and the sound he invented was the earliest beginnings of what the media would later label as 'grunge' .....Songs like "Precarious', Racers, Wring that neck, and "Number One' blew out of the speakers with power....and when it came to playing live, nobody shook the earth and rocked the house with power quite like the Greenhouse Effect....One night in like 1987 or early 88' , the band played at Madamme Wongs in Santa Monica (West Los Angeles) and Keegan's blazing power loud tilted up Fender amp caused permenant hearing damage to drummer/ lead vocalist Clark Haggins' right ear "And thats my 'ggod ear' " says Hagins "It rang badly for like one week after the gig,..eventually i went to a doctor,..but i cured it by just drinking a buncha beers,...after that,..i 'always' wore earplugs when playing Keegan usually,...i didn't wanna go def....but his guitar could even cut through your sweaty earplugs anyway (Laughs) - it was the best ringing i ever heard,..i still hear it to this day twenty years later !! its like singing,..its like a song; its magic to my ears!" Greenhouse Effect featured also their 1988 hit "The Magic Man" a song where lyricist-singer-drummer clark higgins compares the large salary of pro athletels like Magic Johnson to his mom's school teacher pay !!....needless to say, 'the MAGIC MAN' is probobly the all time Greenhouse effect hit song with it's catchy hooks and melody - Greenhouse effect would go onto to play festival gigs in Torrance as they also traveled up to the clubs of Los Angeles like the Anti-club and Raji's and they suffered a great 'near miss' with getting a recording contract with a major..."we're the shit" says Hagins "I'm a forty three year old swimming poool cleaner in Carlsbad right now and i am only now just getting mass known only because of the internet today in 2008 but with the lucky stroke of a pen back in 1989 or 90, ..i could be a Blink182 million-aire right now,..so could Phil !- we just fuckin' missed it,..or maybe they just didn't like us down there in Hollyweird"
