Yesterday Dylan was feeling on top of the world, eating on his own, playing, purring. However this morning he was feeling pretty crappy, he has started to haemorrhage from his rectum because of the Panleukopenia virus attacks the intestinal walls and creates ulcers. The walls are being damaged quicker than Dylan can produce new health tissue to replace the damaged tissue. Dlyan will have to use his immune system to fight the virus off, and heal his intestines in time while we continue to fight this life threatening disease with him.
Because this disease is a virus, which should have been prevented with vaccination (that the pet-store failed to do to save money). We can only treat the damage it is doing, but can not kill the active virus inside him, we can just help him along with the fight his immune system has against this nasty virus. We continue to have him on two different I.V antibiotics which he gets three times a day. He is also on an oral antibiotic which targets the gastrointestinal system. He is on several GI medications to help with his symptoms. We continue to have him in I.V fluids, to prevent dehydration from the haemorrhage. Because his intestines are so damaged right now, he has not been able to absorb his food properly and has started to go jaundice. We have had to start force feeding him again, to prevent 'fatty liver disease' from don't being able to digest his food. Finally we also gave him his 3rd blood transfusion today, to replenish the blood he is loosing from his intestines.
Despite all of the above, he is in good spirits and continued to purr all day, and give affectionate head butts when we were giving him his medications and transfusion.
We were upset to hear that we was not well this morning, as we left with such high-hopes yesterday. But this is a nasty virus that kills almost all kittens affected by it, he is very lucky to be alive and we will continue to fight this virus with him. But it means we are not as close as we though we were to taking him home and winding down his medical expenses. Thank you to everyone who has donated, because of your generosity Dylan's fight for his life will continue. Eleven Eleven could have never afforded his medical bills with out each and everyone of you.
*What Dylan is fighting, was 100% preventible if the pet-store had chosen animals well being over money. They neglected to vaccinate to save money, at the cost of Dylan's life. Dylan should not have to be going through this right now, he should have been preventatively vaccinated. Live animals have no place in for-profit businesses.
