Villareal harnesses high-tech to bewitch his audience. He worked on cutting-edge virtual reality projects at Paul Allen’s Interval Research Corp. in Palo Alto, Calif. He’s left that world to create LED-based art projects that engage viewers in shared experiences.
His installation Firmament II fills a dark room at the Norton, where visitors can recline on contoured lounges and gaze up at the ever-changing light show overhead. White lights speed by or shatter like exploding stars. Some might be tempted to stay in this altered state forever.
