39. Pieces of New Hampshire - Letus Extreme Film
11 months ago
Visit tomguilmette.com

I shot at a friend's farm in New Hampshire and banked a bunch of "Cow" stock footage. You never know when you will need a shot of a cow eating, belching or mooing. I will shoot a much longer Letus film at this beautiful location when I have more time.

Later, I shot a small lean-to type cabin that my friend built with his father. I could live there.

Finally, I went rock climbing with a group of buddies at the "Rumney Rocks" near my camp in Rumney, New Hampshire. Lots of ice, but the rock was dry. This place is very popular all year long and has fixed routes. I will shoot more at this sweet crag this summer.

Shot with the Sony PMW-EX1 and Letus Extreme. I used mostly my Nikon 55mm f2.8 macro with the cows. The audio is from a Sony NV1 shotgun mic. at the rock wall, I also used a Nikon 200mm f3.5. I ran out of light fast, since I shot after the climb.

Graded with Magic Bullet Looks.

Great shots! I look forward to more footage of the rock climbing.

Do you use the MBL presets or do you color grade on your own? Your color is always spot on!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
I use mostly the presets. Not much time to really get it right. Thanks!

nice video, how much does it cost magic bullet for fcp?
  • Bewegtbildarbeiter 11 months ago
    399$ It's worth it!
  • Robert Loughlin 11 months ago
how does it compare to Apple's Color?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
i find magic bullet looks to be far easier to use than apple color. i bought a 500 page book on color and have yet to crack it open!!!
  • Martin Tadilli 11 months ago

Looks terrific! I recognized a piece of the music as a scene transition used in "Curb Your Enthusiasm".

Great work.. Like the way you retained the cows moos, it just brings authenticity to your work.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
wish i get more. the cow eating the grass at the beginning was the only "wild sound" i recorded separately that day. i jammed a sony nv1 shotgun thru the barbwire fence as the cow was chomping away. i added it in during the editing process.

    cool sound also!
  • Karl Geweniger plus 11 months ago
I was very happy to hear that he added some extra sound to compliment the images. I see so many beautiful videos but I feel that they are driven by the music more than the visuals. This video is an exception to that.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
many of my short videos put sound before the picture as far as importance goes. check out "chatham light" and "falling water" in my other videos and crank up the sound to hear what i mean. i spend just as much time with the audio, if not more time, than color grading in those shorts.

Yeah was all of that sound recorded on location? Sounds/Looks awesome!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
all of it was. the beginning (cow eating) was recorded separately as "wild sound" then added back in during editing. the rest was done live with the sony nv1 shotgun camera mic.... with the letus motor spinning!

OMG! damn boring! you ppl are insane!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
not sure if everyone here is insane, but i am. at least you are honest. please post some videos to your vimeo account so that i can see what you find interesting!

There is always a place for beautifully shot pictures, no matter what the content. . .

    Nice work Tom.

Beautiful footage. How do you get the super slow, smooth pans? Really like the selective focus pulls, great wide-open DOF. Perfect colors, like you're right there!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
the key is a good pan head. i love vinten and highly recommend them. what you see in this video was done with a tripod that cost $2,200. and that is cheap when you start looking at the professional level! i currently using the vinten vision 3 mounted on carbon fiber legs. i like the small and lightweight design for hiking it around. plus it is super smooth.

Well it sounds great! I have yet to use a sony nv1. I generally use a Sennheiser 416 and it is terrific. Keep it up man!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 11 months ago
I too have used the Sennheiser mics and they sound great, but that short little Sony NV1 was a pleasant surprise.

Ah yes. Winter on the east coast. I never see any cows in New Jersey. I think they've been hunted to extinction.

i loved the part with the bubbles moving under the ice...

I really enjoyed the cows...being a city slicker and all. The only place I've ever really seen a cow was at the county fair or along the highway. Oh, one time while walking we came up to a group of cows on the road way and I had to let my east coast friend walk in front of me...wow, they are BIG, and scary!

I also loved the music while you were filming the red house, what's the name of it.

My general take on your film...it's very good, except the part at the end with you climbing the rock, this is for another film. I'd cut it out, go back to some shots of the cows maybe in the spring because your film intimates that spring is coming with the dripping water, and then to your logo

    Hey Tom,
Another great video with charm and atmosphere! I was wondering, I have running into the gamma shift bug in QT lately and was wondering if you know how to get around it? Your videos always look great with proper color/saturation/gamma. Thanks!

Totally wasn't what I was expecting. I love the composition of some of the closeups - gives me some ideas for stills I'd like to take some day.

Is it just me or is there some chromatic abberation around the edges of high contrast? I'm assuming that's the Letus?

I love the cows - they of course steal the show, but the colours and the mood of the film is lovely.
