I done this test to study the physics of an avalanche. There are many types of avalanches with distinct visual characteristics. There are wet snow avalanches and powder snow avalanches. There are also other materials like rocks and ice which could be mixed in to both type altering its look and dynamics. I chose to try to mimic a powder snow avalanche which visually and dynamically is similar to a pyroclastic flow. There is huge mass of snow rapidly flowing down a slope. There is a huge amount of less dense but still fast moving snow/dust being turbulently blown up into the air above the fast moving snow pack. This thick turbulating cloud of snow is actually the more visible part of the event. I combined a few techniques to achieve the same base of physics with realflow and FumeFX.
