These images and these sounds were recorded during a travel from "Toulouse" to "Paris", and from "Paris" to "Martinique". We see the North and the South of "Martinique", the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, during the rainy season in July, 2011.

This small video was thought before I arrive on the scene. The images were not priority but it's the sound which guided the shoot and the edition.
Sounds recorded with a zoom H4N (post sync).
Images shot with a tripod and a 7D.

Beautiful short film and amazing sound. I think I will watch this again on my 5.1 system when I get to work on Monday. Again, the sound is incredible. It's very professional. Great work putting all that effort in the the sound production. Keep it up!

PS - what did you use for your underwater shots?
  • Gioacchino Petronicce plus 7 months ago
Thanks, I like working the sound. For underwater shot I use a waterproof case (dicapac)... Thanks for your comment !

Besides, what have you done to avoid or decrease the rolling-shutter effect. In some shots it is visible, but in some moments it "should be much more". That´s why I suspect that you have done something in the post, did you?
  • Gioacchino Petronicce plus 7 months ago
In post, I had just to add a little of contrast, and adjusted the color balance for night shot. I wanted to remove the rolling shutter but my computer doesn't allow it me...

Incredible imagery. Honestly some of the best I've seen out of the 7D. There were a few shots that I had to scratch my head at thinking "how did he get that." If you don't mind me asking...what glass did you use?

    Superbe travail, félicitations !
Si tu as 2 secondes, j'ai quelques questions ! (ou alors mets-ça sous ta vidéo...) :
    - quelles optiques tu as utilisé ?
    - question déjà posée : tu fais quelque chose contre le rolling shutter ?

  • Nicolas Godtschalck 7 months ago
  •
  • Your attention to details especially the audio makes this piece visually stunning... Bravo !!

This really is something special! I don't think I've ever seen images from the 7D look this beautiful. Stunning sound design and editing, really one of my favorite pieces ever! Being a sound engineer myself, I think you captured some really hi-quality audio.
  • Gioacchino Petronicce plus 7 months ago
I'm student in cinema in France and this past year I'had study the sound. In this video I had "rec" the sound with a zomm H4N (very good for travel). Usually I work with a couple of mic (and good recorder) of high quality. I'm frustrated to have use H4N for this "work". Sound landscape in Martinique is rich, for a sound recordist it's a small paradise, and in this paradise the H4N work good even if it misses detail...

thank you... i'm coming from Martinique and the first shot of my island... i was there. Brillant!
  • Gioacchino Petronicce plus 7 months ago
You're therre in the same time ?! This island is amazing !
  • Olivier Martiny 7 months ago
no i mean with your video, and precisely the first shot on the grey sand beach, you succeed to bring me there in less than 1 sec. but may be you speak french no?
  • Olivier Martiny 7 months ago

    Fantastic! Just brilliant, really!

But did you use ONLY the H4N? Or just for recording but with a mic via XLR?
  • Alessandro Rovere 6 months ago
Btw: Where in France do you study films?
  • Gioacchino Petronicce plus 6 months ago
I study films in toulouse (public cinema school in sound), but I also write short films which should be born the next year.
In "under the clouds", I only use the H4N Without other mic.
Otherwise I'm used to working with edirol or fostex recorders as well as a couple of very good mic (akg or shoeps) for short films . But for this video I had only the H4N.

Gioacchino, What a marvelous short. I understand your priority was the sound but the images were very nice as well. I feel there was a disconnect once you landed in the Caribbean, but that is only my personal taste. Really loved your images, I wonder what you will come up when your priority is not the sound. Congratulations.
