Head wind is an inspiring phenomenon: Every time I come home from riding the mountains, my mind is full of new impressions. This short film sums up some of the simple yet complex insights that struck me while riding my mountainbike.

Enjoy. And please share your learnings.

Beautifully done! Did you use an R/C helicopter for the aerial shots or a jib/crane?
  • Filme von Draussen plus 7 months ago
Thank you. Two shots were done with a quadcopter, other "from above" shots were done with cable cams or out of a gondola.
  •
  • Luc 7 months ago
excellent editing and camera angles !!!

    - what software you use for the edit?
    - how did you get those aerial shots?
-what camera you use for the chest scenes?
  • Filme von Draussen plus 7 months ago
Cheers. I edited in Premiere Pro CS5 and composited with After Effects. The chest shots were done with a Gopro HD.

First of all congratulations for your magnificent films that have an expiration for me at the beginning of my footage, so I wonder how many days of filming had to make this film?
  • Filme von Draussen plus 6 months ago
Thank you, Helder. Well, all footage was shot during the last three months. I film almost every time I ride, but as all my equipment fits into my backpack I always take it with me. I rarely do film-only sessions. Most of the time it's mainly about riding and stopping occasionally to shoot.

You seem to always pick that perfect audio, curious to know....do you have a source for these tunes on the web or is it from your own collection and taste? I always struggle to find audio with the right tempo and no vocals.
  • Filme von Draussen plus 6 months ago
Cheers. :-) This is basically a result of my own collection and taste. Though I spent some time on Last.FM and music blogs to find new stuff.

what can i say... your video is the a great short story of all the feelings you can have riding a bike this way. I'am totally agree with you!. Great job, amazing.

what camera you use for the open scenes and wich lens?

    Thanks!!
  • Filme von Draussen plus 4 months ago
Thank you. Can you be more specific what you mean with "open scenes"?
  •
  • Marko Munoz 4 months ago
Sorry! What camera are you using to make all the scenes? A 7d, a 5d, a t3i... Looks amazing!!!
  • Filme von Draussen plus 4 months ago
Marko, most of the time, i use a gopro hd and a Canon 550d (which is a t2i, if i am not mistaken).
  •
  • Marko Munoz 4 months ago
Wow!!!, thanks a lot, nice quality! I'm trying to create some cool mtb videos i had almost the same equipment, a go pro hd, many mounts, a canon t3i, and a zip line for the go pro. So let me tell you something, your videos are very inspiring to me!. I hope soon post one of the very first videos. Thanks again

  • Jo-Inge Mandt plus 4 months ago
Wow! Great idea, even greater scenes, pictures and edit =))

What lens do you prefer on your 550 and do you always use tri/monopod or steadycam?
  • Filme von Draussen plus 4 months ago
Thanks. I like my 50mm 1.8 best, but if i can take only One Lens, i go for the versatility of my Sigma 17-70mm.

And as i film myself most of the time, i always take a gorillapod with me.
  • Jo-Inge Mandt plus 4 months ago
Cool, thanks. That sounds like a great lightweight system for everyday riding. I have the prime and the pod, guess I'll have to bring them out on the trails more often ;-)

Hey cannot sleep without watching this 2or 3 times...
It's inspiring , breathtaking, wonderful images, great way of thinking. . .
Can't helpl but ask for more footage about backstage scenes, cameras, microcopter flying just over bikes, "cine" look
  • Filme von Draussen plus 3 months ago
Thanks for your enthusiastic comment. What exactly are you interested in?
  •
  • George kalogeris 3 months ago
    i ll be more specific
-it begins with time lapse . What's the camera? what is the time frame?
-I see some images (e.g in the snow) being more realistic and more "filmy". Is there a DSLR during those scenes capturing 24fps ? Which one? The rest images with what camera?
    - What did you use for those superb titles? And that old film effect in 0:33 ? Edius I suspect
    - How about moving back during time lapse in 0:43 ?
    - What a neat windy effect in title in 0:49
    - How did you hover the camera in 0:52? It seems moving along the bikes
    - Where is the camera hanging in suspension shots?
    - The environmental sound is very clear, did you elevate it ?

    Even more questions:
-What bike do you use mostly in mountain ?
    - I like very much the helmet, which one is it?
    - Where are the shots taken?
    - Do you find yourself ready to make another image so it can fit the music ?
    - What is the model of the garmin and how do you use it in mtbing?
This is the modern version of mtbing Decalogue. I admire the way you ended up with those conclusions.
  • Filme von Draussen plus 3 months ago
    Oha, lots of questions.
    - The camera in the TL is a Canon 550D, interval must have been 5 or 2 seconds.
    - The "realistic filmy" shots was done with a Gopro at 60fps. :-)
    - Titles and the "old film" effect were done in After Effects. Just some plain old keyframing.
    - This is just a zoom out done in post.
    - The hovering camera is a DIY cable cam. There are some pictures of it on my Facebook page.
    - That's a Gopro with the roll bar mount, screwed to the frame.
    - I used a cheap Sony stereo mic on some of the shots.
    - Most of the times I ride a Canyon Torque ES 9.0 with 160mm of suspension.
    - I don't know about the helmet, this is an old Uvex I've been wearing for a couple of years now.
    - I don't understand what you mean with "Do you find yourself ready to make another image so it can fit the music ?"
    - This is a Garmin Etrex, though I switched to Two Nav Aventura recently. I download tracks from the web or plan them with gps-tracks.com and just follow the line.

    Hope that helps. :-)
