1. Korean High School (Documentary Preview)
In sixty short years, South Korea went from being one of the poorest countries in Asia to having the world's 13th largest economy. Korean students have some of the highest test scores in the world, and a higher rate of acceptance into American Ivy Leagues than any other foreign country. But Korea also leads the world in two not quite so stunning ways- the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita, and a higher suicide rate than any other developed nation.

So. What's life like for a Korean student? In one of the most competitive societies in the world, how does one find their place? What does it take to achieve your aspirations and goals? Our documentary will take a look at the lives of five Korean teenagers on the verge of either reaching- or losing- their dreams. The film will follow the students during the most stressful time of their lives- their last year of high school. After studying for roughly sixteen hours each day, their futures boil down to one last exam. On November 10th, 2011, thousands of high school seniors will take a nine hour test that for many, will determine their economic and social status for the rest of their lives.

I discovered this video via The Grand Narrative, and I commend what you're doing. Both the education and the cosmetic surgery issues are shocking.

I'm a Korean that lived in US for over 22 years....I knew about the problem but seem like no one in Korea is concerned with it. But to encourage the teenagers to have the plastic surgeries to be done to them. Wonder how far it will go before the bubble bursts.

    Amazing project! *___*
It`s really interesting to see (and think about) how the american-caucasian stereotypes have gotten into the general beauty ideal of south korean people.
Hope you have a successful project, and have fun on doing it.
ps.: sorry for the awful english :/

  • this is really nice documentary :) .. but I have an answer for why korean people wants small faces.. .. it just that Asian tends to have bigger heads than other races .. and smaller face looks proportionate... obviously lol

Great video! I have been in Korea twice (one time volunteering in a hostel for three months) And I am looking for a way to stay in Korea for more than a year. I love the country's culture and food. But its hidden face is what intrigues me.

This looks absolutely interesting and I am very much looking forward to seeing this documentary.

"But Korea also leads the world in two not quite so stunning ways- the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita, and a higher suicide rate than any other developed nation."

Actually, South Korea still classifies itself as a "developing nation" in the international community in order to reap the political and economic benefits of not having to follow the global standards and responsibilities of developed nations.

Also, the girl in the video said she got out of school at four-twenty or three-ten during middle school, not four-thirty or three-thirty. ;-)

Overall I am very impressed with this documentary preview.

    Nice to meet you!
    Your documentary is very impressive.
Maybe I graduated from Korean high school like school in your documentary.
When I was high school student, I usually thought real education and this situation(about me for high school student)
And you wake my past ideas.

    P.S I live in Iksan-city...kk
Uniform of that school is familiar..kk

I was gradually impressed by your film
You know well culture of Korean exactly,
many Korean students are discussing and comparing with students in havard uni that they study hard and do it over the night without rest
and that's full of shit in the world actually
    I hate those all..
but we don't have choice, we are in the size of China, Russia, crazy North Korea, Japan which is strongest in the world.. crazy. if they walking, we should run. T.T

Things this film is trying to say are not lies. I can't resist. but it's just maker(foriener)-side of aspects. that is, it's dangerous to show the cases that happen to a few. I've never seen the people who committed suicide because of studying near me in my life. but I totally agree with beauty things though.

Documentary is supposed to be objective. but you're showing only one side like a propaganda. I know your perpose is not bad but I worry that korea is seen like totally crazy. it's not like that.

overall, I would say this documentary is fiction based on non-fiction.

I agree with JaeSeong Lee's comment but I still think this a great idea.

    Hum..
Far as Koreans ladies their appearance is most important subject. The reason is simple, if they can't successes in education the attraction for man and getting married to them will give opportunity to live comfortable life. So in Korea there is only two way to live for Korean ladies.. You study really hard and get on the top and make money or simply invest everything to appearance and make some smart guy who will bring in a bread for you.. Otherwise.... there is not much of choice, because in Korea they don’t look at the man's appearance, personality and more. They tend to look on money, because in order to survive in Korea is not like America. Everything in Korea is expansive; they don’t give welfare like U.S. does. Everything actually ties back to the your study case economic problem.. Survive of Fittest... that is Korean life.. In U.S. you might live on welfare but not much of shame.. But in Korea if you are on a welfare you might commit suicide due to the shame of your economical conditions.. Thus that is why everyone is so competitive, only job opportunity is limited and not much to go around.. They want to have good work position, such as doctor, lawyer, and so on.. No one want to have job as blue collar worker..
if you want more info or dissucass with me email me i will send you my feedback

When i was in highschool in mid 90's, it wasn't this standardizied. I think they should be proud who they usually are and find inner side's beauty rather than appearance and realize there's more valuable things arround.

Wow, white girls discovers issues about white beauty standards. Didn't really need to go all the way to Korea to see that but then most whites are staggeringly clueless. You can see this problem in countries around the world including the US.

Also, funny how it starts out with "students" but then somehow students become only girls.

This documentary started off with good intentions but became very ethnocentrically judgemental of Korean culture. You can read my full reviews and reason for this comment here....
