Let me know what you think...be honest, I can take it. I'm wondering if it's too long/monotonous. Does it keep your attention all the way to the end?

Regarding the music: If you actually believe there is ANY song that will make everyone happy, you are delusionalz. If you have a better track in mind, that's spiffy...make your own video and we'll see how it goes. Otherwise, turn it down or rock your own Chubby Checker (Tom) if you don't like it. ;)

Great vid D! I like the effects at the end.
Of course, nice choice of music :)

Thanks! I felt it was getting a little monotonous after so many minutes from the same angle, hence the effect added at the end.

Eventually I will have enough footage to mix it up and make the Voltron of Gap vids. ;)

What I really likes about it is it gave a whole 'nother angle to watch and really experience the ride. I found it quite exciting to be able to ride along with the rider on the back of their bike. It was more fun than watching a bike that was filmed by a vehicle following behind.

The shadows on the hillside every once and a while was nice as well.

It may be a bit long for "laymen". I liked it and I think die-hards like me enjoy a longer vid. Gap runners always like seeing the entire road run.

The effects were nice, but artistically/continuity wise, since it is just introduce way a the end, they seem to come out of nowhere. If you are going to use effects, I think you need to introduce them earlier, even if just for a few moments. Then they make more "sense" in the film as a whole.

I like the view on this one as well, and I can sit and watch hours of track/driving/riding video at a time, so my interest was there the whole time. At the same time I rewatch the same 30 minute track sessions over and over, so I might not be "normal".

I like the effect as well, but agree w/ comment above on when it was introduced - video would have kept me entertained the whole time w/o it, but another video using more cuts and effects would be really cool w/ that in it.

I was trying to think of something to use that daft punk song with... Also interesting to see the tail w/ no leaves on the trees, much more light out there.

How are you liking the gopro? Have any of the same concerns w/ audio some others have?

side note - I've added some more mounting possibilities to my cars, might be able to get more views at once going on this season... :)

Thanks for the feedback! I have a pretty short attention span, and feel that any video viewed from the same angle for more than 2-3 minutes, no matter how good it is, will not keep the average person's interest...even if it IS mine. ;P

GoPro has been pretty neat...not perfect but not bad for $160. The audio on almost any spy type camera is typically overwhelmed by the stuff we do...they are designed to pick up on conversations covertly after all. On this run I had the waterproof seal removed, allowing more sound in, but the MIC pickup setting was set to low. Still, it overwhelmed the mic most of the time, so I'll try it with the seal installed next time, but I don't expect a lot in that area.

Eventually I plan to pick up a Canon 5DMkII and shoot a HD video similar to this one with my wide-angle lens, a little higher perspective, and a friend out front to keep it more interesting. That, to me, will be the ultimate Gap video. Stay tuned...

I'm looking at the cannon hf11 hd camcorder - all flash memory, perfect for what we do to them :), got a couple lenses, but I want a fisheye too. If I get my older cannon fixed, that gives me 3 camcorders + my point and shoot nikon that does video to have fun with. Can't decide if I want to pic up a gopro or a good lipstick camera, since my older canon will do similar resolution and has video and audio inputs...

Anyway looking forward to the next one

"...any video viewed from the same angle for more than 2-3 minutes, no matter how good it is, will not keep the average person's interest..." right! i realy like this vid, but after 2:30, i caught myself while thinking about my own bike, and that i have to polish it, and so on and so on :) I think, even if you only switch between 2 or 3 perspectives that will be enough to keep the viewers attention much longer.

The music is almost perfectly chosen!

I have seen a million different video clips of runs through The Gap. This angle - to me at least - provides perhaps the best perspective and "sensation" of speed of any video clip I can recall seeing. Being able to see the rider and the bike moving in relation to the road and trees really gives a good perspective. More than perspective - almost a sensation.
Your idea about HD and a rider out front would be the creme de la creme.
My 2 cents - pick one rocking good song and edit the best clips to fit that time span. I agree with ^^^ , much more than a 3-4 mins or so will be too much for those who are watching it just for the WOW !! effect, as opposed to those of us who watch it for the WOW efect AND seeing the road we are familiar with.
Special Effects? Eh, whatever. To me it's more about the riding and how the chosen song "fits".
The song chosen is - to me - way more important that special effects.

    Good work - as always!

Ahhhhh dude. Keep the seal in and your sound will be perfect when set on LO. Did I say perfect? YES. It will be perfect! LO is designed specifically for motorsports like this...you will love it. The sound will ROCK!

This is a killer video! I loved, absolutely loved the perspective. Awesome riding by the way. I enjoy and respect somebody that can actually ride.

Great job, what camera mount setup did you use?
  • killboy plus 10 months ago
It was the suction cup mount that came with the kit. ("GoPro Hero Wide Automotive Kit")

Kicks a$$!! Who does the music? Loved, loved those first 2 songs.
And while the video may have been long, I didn't mind. I just kinda drifted off wishing I could ride like that.

First one is "Man without fear" from the Daredevil movie soundtrack by Drowning Pool and Rob Zombie. Second is "Turn me on Mr. Deadman" by The Union Underground.

    Glad ya liked it!

Great stuff, as usual (we'd expect no less). You could mix it up by mounting another camera ($$Ka-ching!) up front, then edit the tail-piece mounted footage with some from the nose-mounted camera. Might make it a bit less "monotonous" - which it really isn't. Guess I'll just shut up and enjoy the show...
  • killboy plus 10 months ago
Thanks for the feedback, Hogtied. I do plan to eventually capture some footage from different angles, (think CHiPs intro ;) and mix it up...just wanted to share this preview for now. More to come!

killboy you might wanna hold off on the HD camcorder. Sony has a unit that is supposed to be coming out in February to do just that. Nice little business expense.

    sony.ca/hdv/files/Brochures/Camcorders/HXRMC1.pdf

I personally, knowing the road and am familiar with the "riders" exploits enjoyed the film. I did like the affects but aggree with the other comments. The blur at the beginning now was a nice touch.

What did you edit the footage render the effects in? I could learn from you.
  • killboy plus 10 months ago
That is a pretty neat kit...wonder how much it'll cost. I think Panasonic has something similar that's been out for a while now. The lens on the Sony only goes to 43mm wide-angle, if you can call that wide. And even with the optional 0.7 screw-on converter, that still leaves you at 30mm. WAY too narrow for me. This GoPro Wide is equivalent to about 8mm.

The recorder I want and mentioned above is actually a new DSLR camera by Canon that has HD recording capabilities. That would allow me to use my various pro lenses, like my 10-22mm wide angle or 28-300mm L telephoto for some great range and control of the DOF. Just check out:

    vimeo.com/2581629

...and pay special attention to the narrow focus depth in some of those shots!

My video was edited in iMovieHD with the default effects built-in to the program. I really don't have much experience with it...was just dorking around trying to learn it for now.

Nice video, and awesome riding! ^^

Little question about the GoPro. How did you fix it on the bike? With one of the 3M sticky mounts right on the careenage of the bike?

Did you find it reliable, and is it possible to remove the sticky mount later without damaging the plastics/paints ?

I'm looking forward to your next vids heh ^^
  • killboy plus 8 months ago
Thanks Mental! I used the big cam-lock suction cup included in the "Motorsports" GoPro kit. As long as the surface is clean it holds great.

The stick-on mounts I have used quite a bit in paintball and the RC heli vids, and they have never failed, but that's not moving over 20mph either. It's 3M adhesive, so should be pretty strong, but probably need to make DAMN sure it's clean with no grease before attaching. Prep with alcohol first. Not sure about removal.

This is a great angle for getting that 2-up feel riding along with you. It stands on it's own as is...however, if you're wanting to make a more mainstream "wow" type vid, try doing the run several times with the camera mounted in different positions, then cut between them with the music. If you have Final Cut Pro, use the color app to richen the colors (saturation, etc.)

Mad props to your riding skills. Just amazing. I rode the Dragon for the first time this past Saturday (Oct. 17). It was raining, so we had to take it a bit slow. Had a blast, and can't wait to see the pics from you guys.

    Stay fast and safe...
