December 31, 2008. Please excuse my poor video shooting skills, shaky hands, and editing.

Shot with the 5D Mark II and the EF 24-105 f/4 L IS, but stabilization was turned off because I forgot to turn it back on after the tripod shots.

Nice shots, Marco. Way to work that lens.

    Jacob looks mildly amused.

Amazing. I'm so jealous of that camera. It looks beautiful. And to think I was going to dump all my money into getting a 50D. Time to start saving more!

Canon has hinted at plans to add video capability to whatever comes next in the 30D/40D/50D lineup. But you might have to wait a year for that. And you wouldn't get the other benefits of full-frame -- most notably, the high-ISO noise performance probably won't be as good.

The 5D Mark II is definitely an awesome camera. Feel free to come play with mine whenever you recover from your ultra death virus and come back to the office.

Eh, I don't care so much about the video, but rather the quality of the photography. I don't really need to film with it when I have an HVX200. However, I'm in dire need of a Mark II. Drool.

Also, it was food poisoning. 5 days of no food really hurt me.

I should warn you, though: once you've used the 5D, the Rebel feels very tiny and underpowered by comparison. Especially the viewfinder. You REALLY want a full-frame viewfinder.

  • This is awesome. Is your camera able to record sound that well?
  • Marco Arment 3 years ago
I guess, if you call that "well". It's just the 5D Mark II's onboard mic.

One disadvantage of it, though, is that you can hear the image stabilizer spinning if you have IS enabled (in this video, I didn't). But I can't really fault them for that.

If you plan to record "real" sound with this, you should definitely get an external microphone. It has a 1/8" mic-in port.
  • Good to know, thanks. I guess I was just surprised that it didn't have as much "hiss" as most onboard mics do. Good stuff, keep up the good work.
