I got a last minute invite from Chip McAlpine to join him on his photo trip to Crater Lake National Park to shoot stars.

This was certainly a demanding trip in all aspects: before/during/after, financially, and relationships. But, damn, the results are one of my favorite so far from the years I've been shooting stars.

The timelapse motion in the video is made possible by using the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero dolly system. For more information about them visit:

Music by Joshua Radin.

What equipment did you use and what settings did you use for the last shot with the Milky Way?

Ya, I know what you mean about the strain financially and on relationships. My social life so often gets in the way of my need to get out and shoot... there are so many locations I've had in my mind to shoot with my Dynamic Perception since last year and life is keeping me from it. I every case but one, I have had to find a way to get away from everyone and end up traveling to remote locations solo. Everyone loves the results but it is sure tough finding anyone with the passion or patience to go with me to get more shots. The hardest part for me now is seeing footage everyone else with a DP system getting those shots I've been wanting to get.

If you're ever in Belgium or I'm near you, I'd love to go out and get those shots!

    Great job man, great job.

How far from your vehicle did you have to pack in all that gear?? :-)
  •
  • Ben Canales plus 6 months ago
Thanks everyone! It was a real enjoyable challenge to make this :-)
@Chris Conti- it was about 2-3 mile hike in. So, not bad, but I'm not in shape- so all the extra equipment weight killed me!
  • Chris Conti plus 6 months ago
Hey, 2-3 miles in snowshoes with weight of all that gear ain't easy, even on the best terrain! Props man, serious props.

I like this very much. Your exposure is perfect, and the tent in the foreground definitely adds a different feel to the landscape...makes it feel less sterile. Well done!

Amazing. Definitely looking into the dynamic perception dolly. Do you zoom in on your photos to achieve the zoom? I can't imagine it's you rotating the lens manually.. Also, do you shoot your timelapses in raw format? I'm not familiar with it yet as my computer can't handle it anymore. Please give me your thoughts on my The Alps at night timelapse movie :) thanks, big fan!!
