The visual narrative of 25 teachers from across America selected for the 2011 summer institute of the Holocaust Educators Network hosted by The Memorial Library: thememoriallibrary.org

Teachers stayed at Columbia University for 2 weeks in July. Each morning they took the subway to 79th St. and transferred to the M79 bus for daily seminars at The Memorial Library - 58 E. 79th St. - for a day of research on teaching the Holocaust in the classroom. Topics included, book analysis and response, The National Writing Project, narrative forms of exploration, sensitivity to trauma in classroom projects, topos/chora and creativity, drama, and guest speakers. Holocaust survivors Irving Roth and Bronia Brandman presented their stories, along with authors and educators from around the world. Sondra Perl and Jennifer Lemberg directed the seminars, paired with excursions in New York: The Jewish Heritage Museum, Brooklyn & Coney Island, The United Nations, sailboat tour of New York Harbor, dinners at Joe's Shanghai and the Boathouse in Central Park, and Shabbat services at Temple Shaaray Tefila followed by Shabbat Dinner at the Library with Klezmer musician Greg Wall.
