Here’s a film taking you behind the scenes on ‘Gulp’, Aardman’s world record breaking short film. It reveals what went in to making such a complex film outside and away from the controlled environment of a studio, and how it was shot using a Nokia N8.

You can't do stuff like this for free now can you? And it's amazing how well the product has been incorporated. Besides I am really impressed with the picture quality of the phone though I switched from Nokia to Android some time back. Great effort. Cheers.
  • Ivi Topp 5 months ago
    Really? why not?

Id rather not have the biggest stop motion in the world, and enjoy small indie productions without trying to sell me phones.

    Cheers

Because us volounteers had to be fed, our accomodation and transport paid for.

Hiring a panalux generator truck, stagelights in excess of 6000 watts, multiple vehicles such as the cherry picker, prop vans and shelter bus.

And massive, massive props arn't cheap to build.

Things quickly add up, and this really was a shoestring budget as I understood it.

The making of really helps a lot to realize how BIG the scale of the production was.
Definitely an eye-opener to the fellow animators out there.

Congrats for this unique movie ! It was definitely worth the hard work.

As a artist who has worked on stop motion almost exclusively outdoors (for my photography studio) on "no budget", I truly can appreciate the scale, and artistry of this piece. It's truly amazing work! Nice to have a guy from Aardman studios there too! Out of curiosity was this shot for Nokia? Commissioned or spec?

How did you avoid flicker with changing light during the daytime shots? SO impressive.
  • Toby Howell plus 6 months ago
I let the cameras use their Auto exposure, that way they balance the overall exposure using small shutter increments. If you look the changes are mainly shadows appearing and disappearing, with the cameras riding the exposure to compensate. Once the blue overcast / yellow sunny colour casts were slightly balanced out in the grade then it all looks fairly even.

Absolutely mesmerizing! How did you prevent the footprints from showing?
  • Dale Bird 5 months ago
The deepest ones were swept away, but others are just to shallow to cast much of an inner shadow and are hard to see on camera. Unless you check frame by frame.
