Riders race one another to qualify over 2 or 3 laps, depending on the length of the track. The losers may still qualify. From the quarter finals onwards, the riders race against one another over two legs. Sometimes we see track stands, where the idea is to get your rival to make the pace, which puts him at a disadvantage when it comes to the explosion into the final sprint.
