Thought I'd take the 5D MKII for a test drive. This video represents some rough sketches from a minor snow storm in downtown Seattle. Most people seemed to be heading home, for a Sat. things were pretty dead due to road conditions.

Lenses used: 70-200 2.8 IS, 16-35 I 2.8. No image post-processing used other than playing with speed.

Fantastic Luke! This very much captures the moment. I like how you've included subtle hints of Seattle. The sepia-like hue and downtempo music are also beautiful complements.

it's great how you took advantage of the sepia atmosphere of the streets. I you didn't mention it, I would have believed there was image processing.
And the music fits perfectly with the calm urban shots!

Abit sad, but still good and interesting.

Nice, lots of average shots look spectacular here - amazing camera. A lot of pull focus throughout the video, great clarity. Especially enjoyed the use of the rearview mirror on the car. Looking forward to where you take these ideas next. Enjoyable video throughout

    Luke,

What have you been doing in the movies?

Your work is above the average, for saying at least.

This should be finished as a full aesthetic piece of work as it really is. Not just as another 5D MKII demo.

I've 'got' to go after your editing too, as your spectator/watcher now. Three years of education in editing as background and another three or so through the net, it takes me to say to you that's not usual to find out such level of 'eye' over the web.

    Kudos,
    Emanuel :-)

Drenched in mood and atmosphere, you definately have a great eye thats for sure.

My only criticism is that this video could of been almost half the length it was and might of been stronger for it.

Also the frame blending on the slowed down shots kind of kills the sharpness. I know that in premiere every shot you put in a timeline automatically gets frame blending applied which I think is really dumb because its not nessacary in most situations, I suppose it all depends on your frame rate and shutter speed too though.

Terrific choice in music though, and some of those shots were like oh my god drop dead gorgeous, Im really looking forward to see what else you produce.

    Great work man.

Very nice tone. I think the eos 5D wins over the Nikon D90 when it comes to HD resolution and compression quality but I still think the D90's 24fps framerate delivers the true film motion in contrast to 30fps. I wonder if the 5D suffers from rolling shutter artifacts.
  • Jeff Wilcox 3 years ago
I believe 24p is over rated. If film was cheaper at the time, I'm pretty sure filmmakers would have gone with a high frame rate. Today, I personally like the 60 frame rate. (HMC-150) I'd much rather go with a higher frame rate. Having said that, there is no reason that the 5D can't have a software upgrade to record at 24p.
  • Luke Humphrey plus 3 years ago
FWIW: My wish list for future 5D video-related firmware updates is as follows (in priority order):

    1. Control over aperture, shutter, and ISO
    2. Ability to externally monitor video and/or view finder enabled during video mode (for increased manual focus accuracy)
    3. Record at higher fps (for better slow motion)
    4. 24p option
    5. AI Servo

I don't know how realistic these are, but there it is.

  • Cheng Ka Chun plus 3 years ago
beautiful~!! May I know any flickring problem when shooting outdoor lights like D90 's?
  • Luke Humphrey plus 3 years ago
Thank you and all for the comments. I personally have not noticed a flickering problem with the MKII in any lighting environment. I did notice some occassional skipping or stuttering in camera when panning, but I've since upgraded to a 30 MB/s sandisk CF card and have not noticed this since. Time will tell, however, if this has solved my problem.

There is a separate problem related to jumpy pans when viewing 30p (MKII) videos on vimeo, as vimeo transcodes at a lower frame rate (24-25p).
  •
  • Fredrik Forsberg 3 years ago
    @Jeff Wilcox:

I guess we are closing in on classical discussion about low vs high fps and what makes us like one rate over the other. Is it just a matter of what we are used to (video:high, film: low) or is the lower frame rate leaving things out for our brain to
interpret and therefor sort of attracting more imaginative people? Maybe some people's brains like filling out the blanks (even if it is just fractions of seconds in time capture), maybe some do not. Perhaps thats the key issue here; what our brain likes. Reality vs fantasy and what medium works best for narrating with images. I guess this has been discussed forever.

Fredrik - I think you expressed it well. 24 fps has an emotional, rather than rational appeal - a bit like distortion on guitars. We like dirty coz it's more human, I guess.

Great video - my D90 'video' definitely suffers in the comparison, lol.

I retreated to my study, smoked a stoggie, and decided to call it a day, my work here was done, there was no way Bennitta Applebomb was going to be found, not on these lonly streets, not tonight.

  • Luke Humphrey plus 2 years ago
Hi Brandon, sorry just seeing this 7 months later! ISO varied I believe because this was pre-firmware update. Probably dipped into 1600 many times though. I hear the new Mark IV has insane ISO performance.
