NEW CODE: VL3D0012
Here is a demo of the Mitra 3D Mic Pro - that's right: 3D Audio. You pretty much have to hear it to see how good it is versus the average microphone setup.

Go to 3dmicpro.com and use coupon code VL3D0012.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PUT ON HEADPHONES.

For more information you can read: blog.vincentlaforet.com/2011/08/03/3d-mic-pro-and-immersive-audio/
This was shot with both the Canon 5D MKII and the RED Epic and the 3D Mic Pro with the Zoom H4N. The audio is RAW - in other words it was not mixed in any way in post and I find the results incredibly impressive. Point is: you can push this audio much further - but this helps to make a point of just how solid this mic is "out of the box."

For more info go to blog.vincentlaforet.com/mygear/audio/

The footage was shot on in Yosemite and San Francisco (on the Island of Alcatraz)

Interesting... disappointed that you're selling point is "3D" though. Come on...be original.

Not sure it's the best use for it to be honest - could work very nicely. Someone should try out there and I'll post. Really think this mic shines for some nat sound / exterior etc.

really great stereo sound. what's with the "3d" name, we have only 2 ears?
  • Vincent Laforet pro 6 months ago
I don't name'em - but truth be told - it does feel 3 dimensional to some degree. If you rotate the mic 180 degrees while wearing headphones it feels VERY odd. You can definitely feel the sound wrap around from left to right and behind you. So it might not be 3D - but it's pretty close. Definitely 180 degrees.

fair enough. the important thing is the amazing sound and great job by the cameraman. sorry for the slight criticism :) regards

would be interesting to hear a comparison against 'traditional' stereo mic setup - two unidirectional mic's in a X formation.

but yeah, stereo recordings of location sound can enormously better than even a pile of mono recordings.

I don't mean to offend anyone but this microphone/technology isn't anything spectacular or something that hasn't been heard of before.
Stereo micing techniques like AB space pair, X-Y pair, M&S pair or even the Binaural recording sound as good if not better. 3D Mic pro is just handy as you can just plug and record but the technology behind it is nothing new and is widely used in the sound recording world anyways. In fact top of the line microphone companies like DPA and Soundfield have gone beyond this stage and are now offering 5.1 mics that give discrete outputs without the need of processing unlike the 3d Mic Pro which depends on the Waves UM226 plugin to give a 5.1 output which in reality is a plugin that given any stereo source will create/produce a 5.1 soundtrack using specific phase algorithms. So it's nothing specific to the 3D Mic. I personally feel Mitra's 3D just offering a ready-to-be-plugged-in stereo microphone with a fancy name "3D'.

Sorry once again I don't mean to offend anyone epecially Vincent Laforet as I am a big fan of your work and your achievements. I am just saying what I strongly feel as an audio professional.
  • Jonas plus 6 months ago
Just what I was thinking. The technique is nothing new and I find it odd that they compare i with a shotgun mic in the beginning. Both has its uses!

And no, there's nothing "3d" about this approach, not more than a similar stereo pair method anyway.

No offense taken. There have been high end and very sophisticated systems around for decades. This is indeed meant to be a "handy" system as you say - that we can all use w/o much expertise as audio engineers - and that's absolutely the point.

Every time a "simple" technology comes out - many people bring similar point and I've come to expect it by now. And I think it's great and fair to educate people that a lot of this has indeed been around. What makes this mic cool is that someone w/ limited audio expertise can do it.

There will always be a high end (and that's good and necessary!)

Does it plug into your Zoom via two XLR's? I'm guessing it's superior (it better be!) to the Zoom's onboard mics, but that would be another cool comparison (stereo vs stereo rather than mono shotgun vs stereo).

Oh man, Vince, so much to learn, and spend, for that matter. This is unbelievable. I've been holding out on audio for my Nikon D7000, and the Indie model seems perfect for what I want to do. I'm a photographer first, but clearly, video has so much to offer. Got any recommendations on a hot shoe adapter to connect to the shock mount? This is probably also the point in time where hand holding is no longer an option without a rig...

Thank you for sharing what you learn as you go. I'm blown away by your work obviously, and also how simple, even how relatively affordable it is to create and capture such high end content.

the shot of the golden gate bridge at :40 is phenomenal and really shows the impact of that mic....felt like it was a shot out of Shutter Island! After I get my Scarlet I'll have to save even more money for that!

well we do have two ears for a reason! very interesting tool. I would like to play with that little diddy for an edit and see how it effects the mood of things since I find sound almost the most crucial element.

    Vincent,

Was the traditional shotgun mic you showed first, in mono? Or was it a stereo mic? If the regular mic example was stereo then the Mitra 3D is impressive.

    Thanks Vincent,
I have been watching the mic and will likely pick up soon. I agree that this is yet another example of democratizing quality gear - that helps raise the bar (and the number of bars being raised) Depending on the project, this mic can create that edge as one of the differentiators.
(and who cares about the name, 3D Mic, HD Mic) very cool!

I agree with some of the comments above that point out that we are hearing stereo and there are a number of techniques to produce it and microphones already that do a good job. I did not like the fact that the shotgun mic tested was pointed away from the source thus not producing higher frequencies.

3D audio? Just a word of caution... anyone who knows anything about audio will not be pleased by the marketing hype. I don't want to knock your product, as it does attempt to get people to think about capturing location sound in a way that compliments the image. I always encourage everyone to invest even a fraction of their budget/time/energy into thinking about original audio (as opposed to "borrowing" someone else's music). But many will be put off by the price tag and should know there are far more affordable options that will yield good results with proper use.
