Ok, I sold my Merlin and made a DIY version of it base on this vimeo.com/1285705

Instead of using a mini tripod as a gimbal, I use a ball joint 1/4"-28 from ebay. I can adjust lateral and vertical setting to achieve better balance. Cost me around $65.

Oh Mon Dieu!!! Ben dis donc! C'est Super Roland.. Comme d'habitude, you just don't disappoint do you!?

Puisque je peux rien foutre de solide avec mes mains, je pensais a acheter un GlideCam 2000 - bhphotovideo.com/c/product/193812-REG/Glidecam_GL2000_2000_PRO_Camcorder_Stabilizing.html
Dis moi ce que t'en penses ok?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
Merci Ivan!
  • Ivan Mbakop 11 months ago
Tu as raison a propos du reajustement, mais apres avoir lu aujourd'hui, j'ai contate que la cam peut etre un peu legere pour ce stabilizer la. Donc, voila. back to 0... unless you recommend an actual Merlin... now I found this: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=320325536016
Si seulement je savais bricoller comme toi...

Great work, Roland. I wish I could see your set-up in more detail to understand how yours differs from the one you based it on. It seems to work really well.

    nice movement...
    but what about the focusing?
and how did you manage to keep the noise so low?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
    Thanks Naim,
You cant focus with the steadicam, only way is using an electronic focusing device.

For low noise I drop the exposure compensation to -0.7 and then I Aim the camera around in liveview mode until what I see please me... and only then I lock AE-L (HOLD)
  • naim alwan 11 months ago
i have seen the making of videos with a focus puller focusing with the camera on a steadycam. the follow focus is connected via some sort of spring (well not spring, its a flexible rod) so it does not effect the movement of the stedi cam...

    does that make sense??
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
Maybe, I don't know, believe me any kind of pression and you will lose balance... even if its to windy outside the cam can start to wobble...
  • bastien francois 15 days ago
on a steadycam the focus puller actually use a wireless remote focus, or should use one.

Thanks for posting, I was wondering what you had done with the Merlin when you said you had built a DIY. How does it perform on uneven surfaces, like snow?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
NP Trin, I didn't test it outside yet, but I'm pretty sure it will perform well on snow... maybe not on ice though... :)
I will probably make a test outside soon.

Fantastic. I was wondering if this design could hold a video DSLR. How did you find this gimbal grip? Why did you replace it? Was the tripod not able to safely hold the weight?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
    Thanks Mark,

I bought something like that from Ebay: cgi.ebay.com/1-4-28-Right-Hand-Ball-Joint-Made-inUSA_W0QQitemZ300276699252QQcmdZViewItem QQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item300276699252&_trksid=p3911.

I replaced the mini tripod because it was not moving as smooth as I would like, especially when there is more weight involve. This little ball join move a lot smoother. I take out the rubber part and its move more freely even with more weight.
  • Mark Fong 11 months ago
Thanks for the info. I ended up getting a Giottos MH-1003 ball head for its range of motion and 8.8 lb weight rating ($36).

What did you use for the grip? As I still need to figure that out.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
I made a grip out of a copper tube that I insert in some pvc pipe, finish the job with some Styrofoam handle... I used an hexagonal coupling nut that fit perfectly tight inside the copper tube and than I put the threaded ball join part inside the coupling... very DIY :) but work perfect.

  • KFLeung 11 months ago
Thanks Roland. That's brilliant, I agree mini tripod is not good enough and I have been searching for alternative for long time (of course Merlin gimbal is good but it is too expansive that violating my DIY spirit of low setting up cost). I am going to replace the mini tripod with the ball head as well. Do you think which is better, Giottos MH-1003 or 4-28 Right-Hand-Ball ?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
Thanks KFleung! I'm sure the Giottos MH-1003 would work but I'm very satisfied with the 1/4-28 Right-Hand-Ball join. which one is better? I don't know... :) but for the price the Giottos must be good... by the way, your tutorial was very inspirational.
  • Mark Fong 11 months ago
I got the Giottos MH-1003 and I would advise against it. The ball is spring-loaded so even if you loosen the tightening screw, there is still tension on the ball. Under weight it loosens up but the gimbal action isn't that smooth still. I may try some WD-40 (lubricant) and see if that helps.

    hey Roland,
how did you attach the ball joint to the the bracket? it looks like you drilled through the metal and put a screw and nuts to lock it in.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
Exactly. with the screw I can adjust height for the gimbal if I need more or less bottom heavy. just like the Merlin.
  •
  • Mark Fong 11 months ago
One more thing, what did you use for the extension arm for the weight? And approximately how much weight did you attached. Thanks.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
I used a square washer at the base,1/2 INCH DIA BOLT/ROD SIZE; 1-5/8 INCH LENGTH; 1-5/8 INCH WIDTH; 1/4 INCH THICKNESS, P/N from Thomas&Betts AB241-1/2... from most electrical supplier. the rest are big 1/4 washers... 8 of them.

hi roland, im really interest with this DIY steadicam and today i was goes to bigest photography store @ my city. but, at there i couldnt found the flash bracket and giottoz MH 1003. :( but they suggest me to use a manfrotto 585 modosteady.

in your mind, for nikon D90, which is better? manffroto 585 or steadicam DIY? or both is equal?

    thanks
  •
  • Roland Cadieux plus 8 months ago
I didn't try the Manfrotto but after reading some reviews, If I had to choose, Ill keep my DIY steadicam... :)

I hear your in the process of making another version of the DIY steadicam. What are you thinking of changing? I just ordered a ball joint. Found some thick aluminum at home depot and am thinking of just bending it in a u instead of buying the $50 dollar flash bracket.

    Love your vids...
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
I must have miss this post... sorry for the late answer.

    I hope your project went well, I completly redesign my steadicam base on this gimbal but with a different body;

    Great work!

Besides the price difference what else is better about the DIY steadicam from Merlin? I might have a chance to get the Merlin at under $100 so not sure if I should go for it or not...
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
Thanks JareN! Take the merlin at that price.

Your videos are incredible. What electronic focusing device are you using, if any? My videos are all out of focus which is why I gave up shooting videos with the D90.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
Thanks Carolyn! I dont use any kind of electronic focusing device, I know its hard to focus with the D90,

I sold my D90 and bought a Panasonic GH1, a better camera for video and with auto focus with the kit lens... great cam... you can watch some of my latest videos with the GH1.

Hi Roland, kind of a bit late since you replaced your D90. But I'm a bit curious anyhow. I built a steadicam much like the one that KFLeung used, but using it with the D90 seems like its a bit unbalanced. It seems like its due to the grip/battery side of the camera. So while the steadicam still works fine, the unbalance causes a bit of lean to the right, making it horizontally unbalanced. How did you workaround this when you were using the D90?
