Here is the opening of our film THE RUNNING GAME with the poem written by Peter Fenton. The poem and film have become legendary in Australian rugby circles. This film is the first to truly look inside the game, get to know the players and see what it is that makes them commit to what in those days was a truly amateur tour of the U.K. and Ireland. The players received ten pounds a days for 3 months and through one of the worst winters of the 20th Century they played a brand of Rugby that endeared them to the crowds.
For years THE RUNNING GAME was shown to players when they were first selected to play for Australia to give me an understanding of the history and responsibility of wearing the gold jersey. Captain Nick Far-Jones regularly showed the film the night before test matches to inspire his troops.
That amateur age seems like a distant memory but the love of the game is still the same.
